Question regarding the striking of coins, Primarily about the collar.

I have seen a few boardstruck IHC's that were struck out of collar. After thinking this through, my idea of how a coin was struck goes out the window. The way I invisioned it was:
1. The coin drops into the collar, that is in position over one of the dies, this keeps the planchet somewhat in place.
2. The other die smacks the planchet, creating the coin, then that die returns to it's position.
3. Collar then rotates, letting the coin be ejected, then returns back over the die waiting to catch the next planchet.
4. Repeat step 1
However after thinking about this, if the collar did not return back over the die, then what stoped the planchet over the die so it could be stuck squarly and just not fall off the die?
Can someone please explain this to me.
