Want to win some early type at wholesale prices?

I have three items ending today and they are way too low. Here's the list:

1839-O Half
I paid $825 for this in May from a Fox Valley auction. Currently at $450 with 12 hours to go.

1809 Half, O-100, R.4+.
This one is the scariest for me. I paid $500 for this recently and it is only at $27! This piece is valuable for the die marriage. But come on! An 1809 Half for $27 and only 5 bids? I knew better than to list it on eBay. In the past I have always done well on eBay, but I have sold much there this year and it looks like things have changed for the worst. It is obvious that eBay has scared away a lot of legit buyers and sellers lately.

Nice, original 1812 Half.
This one closes today and it is at only $17. I wish I could buy coins this cheap! I think this one was purchased for $60 or so.

Okay, sorry for whining so much! I can understanding losing here and there, but this is crazy. There's always the chance that some of these have snipers watching, but maybe not. If these are going to sell for less than wholesale, I would at least want some of my forum friends to be the benefactors.

EDITED TO ADD: I have a customer with a Feuchtwanger Three Cent (1837 - NY Coat of Arms) in PCGS MS-63 (tied for finest at PCGS). $6,900. If you know of anyone interested, please pm me. I am not involved in the transaction..... just trying to help a customer.

I wish you well on these Dennis. I feel your pain. I listed two IHC's in NGC old fatty holders a month ago and lost my butt on them. I try to stay away from eBay anymore unless a loss is my expectation. We all can't be Russ. image

It's been hit or miss lately.

PCGS Rattlers have been doing real well lately, at least from my standpoint. Had a couple that sold for 100% over CDN bid (CDN bid was around $200).

You're in the black (barely) on the 1839-O, with a little more than an hour left.

You paid $500 for the 1809? Why? I mean, it's a nice coin and all, but I don't get it. But I don't do die marriages and varieties. The specialization might be your problem, with a niche item like that?

It's at $177.50 with 1 hr 42 min left, and already bid beyond what it's worth to me, personally. (But then again, I'm blissfully ignorant of die varieties). As of my viewing it, it's about at VF money (for a regular variety), and that's too rich for my blood, since of course the coin is not a VF. It is a very handsome piece for a circ coin; I hope somebody gets busy on it soon!

Your 1812 was in the forties or low fifties. I gave it a bid. You say you paid $60, and that is about the max I would pay, myself. I bid just a tad less than that (deducting shipping cost). To my surprise, I became high bidder, but eBay told me I was only one bid away from letting it get away. If any snipers are watching it, I am not likely to win, because current bid is exactly at my max bid: $56.65, with an hour and 45 minutes left. You should at least break even on that one.

So the only one that it looks like you're gonna lose on is the 1809.

    OK, Dennis.

I felt your pain so much that I bid on your 1809 half. And am in the lead at $214.50, with a max proxy bid of $226.65.

Which scares hell outta me since there is only an hour and a half left and it is nearly 2 AM eastern, which makes me wonder who else is watching. I hope they are.

This was a blatant shill bid, since I cannot afford the coin right now and I do not want it at that price, anyway.

HOWEVER, before anybody goes and blows the whistle on me, let me say that it is not completely a shill bid, in that you didn't ask me to do it, and I will complete the transaction if I win. I will just need your patience in awaiting my payment.

And perhaps you'll buy the coin back from me later or trade it for some other Bust halves. (I do need Bust halves, but just common collector coins, not expensive, specialized varieties.)

Your Reeded Edge went for $836, netting you a gross profit of $11.00, so maybe after the fees and all, you broke even on it.

It looks like I am mere minutes from winning your other two, unless somebody has some snipe software running. (LordM crosses fingers).

Two minutes left on the 1809, and eight on the 1812.

Woohoo! I got sniped on the 1809! Thank you, " jeffersonerrors", whoever you are! (And if you're a CU member, reading this, let it be known that though I just made Dennis 40-50 bucks with my bid, and cost you the same, it was a real bid. I'd have eventually paid up if I won.)

Now, let's see if I win the 1812. Probably won't. If I do, great- I need some cheap Bust halves. If I don't, great. My budget's not the best right now.

Well, I just won the 1812 for $56.65. I'm cool with that.

Do gimme a little while to pay up, though, please. Got a mortgage payment and some other big bills due this morning. When my own eBay auctions end later this week (hint hint), I will have some money for you. image

Rob...ya gotta be careful late at night, esp on a Sunday night, with "helpful" bids image
You might end up owning some coins you didn't plan on image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

That's why I couldn't bail him out on that 1809 (wouldn't have wanted to own it at that price, anyway). I am quite relieved to have been sniped by a penny! image

(Had it been cheaper, though, I would have not minded owning it. It just wasn't worth the premium for the variety... to me.)

I'm perfectly content to own the 1812 I won- I needed a low-end Bust half or two for my antique mall booth. (Now I just need a cheaper Bust quarter or two.)
