For $50,000.00 cash, tax free, would you walk away from the Registry?

Ok, here's the deal. You get to keep your coins but you must drop out of the Registry and never participate again. Either directly, or indirectly. If you're caught doing so, you forfeit your prize money.
Would you do so for $50,000.00?

  • Yes. I'd probably even buy some coins with it too image I'd sell my #1 Proof Jefferson set for a crazy price too. How could I not? I keep kicking myself on not selling all my stocks at the top...

Some of you are missing the 'indirectly' part of this quiz. You couldn't take your prize money and buy anymore "Registry" coins! That's the part that makes this equasion tricky.

  • So, let me see if I have this right, Pat...
I get $50k to step away from all the "rules" of etiquette associated with involvement in the registry, and, enter the world of leasing my coins to you guys? image
Sounds like a "no brainer" to me.
Seriously, I wouldn't take the $$$, as the upside for growth of value of my sets, being connected to the registry, is greater than $50k now. Interesting question.
  • Yes. I'd actually do it for a lot less, but if you're going to give me $50k Pat, go ahead!

I think if everyone walked away the value of everyone's coins would go down. I think in the aggregate the registry is leading to greater demand for rare coins. The registry program has certainly added value to my coins. So, if for $50,000 I have to forgo future benefits, including future price appreciation I probably wouldn't do it.

By the way MJ Coin. If your stocks have dropped 20% and your coins have outperformed threefold, what % have your coins returned?image

  • I enjoy the registry set listings, but I most certainly would for that kind of amount! As much as I'd hate it, I'd even stop collecting coins completely if necessary!image

I don't consider buying "registry quality" coins
to be indirectly participating in the registry but...

even if I did I would take the $50K to drop out.

Since I couldn't buy coins I would either buy a Porsche
or drop it in the stock market.

Interesting concept, but if I took the money, I wouldn't be able to buy any more coins that could potentially appreciate in value. Also, you've got to remember that we're all mortal, and may someday want to sell our coins to Registry participant. While grading companies may come and go, I think the idea of some sort of registry will be with us for a long time. It may prove to be the wrong decision in the long run, but I'd pass on the $50,000.

I am upping the bidding in this contest. However, this is my final offer. I will drop out of the PCGS Registry race forever (right now I have one set of gold commems only) for $2000. I will drop out of both the NGC and PCGS registries forever for $10,000. Please confirm your acceptance of this offer at your earliest opportunity.

Best regards and with full confidence in the conclusion of a mutually satisfactory agreement,

The way it was worded, I get the cash, keep my coins, and can't participate in the Registry. But I can still continue to buy/sell/trade/assemble any type of collection I want, but I can't share that info in public registry. Hmmm. Where do I sign?
  • Yes, if no restrictions on how I use the money. I am getting burned out on Registry anyway. In fact, two of my sets were removed by me yesterday.

No. If there were no Registry then I'd have to spend a lot of time looking at coins instead of numbers on an insert. That's just too difficult. I'd rather buy numbers on an insert because they are the highest numbers available and feel important rather than buy coins I liked.

  • Braddick: Being "offered" twice as much?! I don't really think so! However, I will be happy to send my email address so that the sum (either sum!) can be sent to my paypal account!imageimageimageimageimage
