What do you do with your donruss puzzle pieces?

I am sure you all have come across 1 or 2 donruss puzzle pieces at some time or another, just curious what you guys do with them.
Are any of these worth anything at all? I have a bunch of mint 1981 Donruss puzzle sets and I am trying to figure out what I should do with them.

ive seen em slabbed and graded before which is prob a pretty good idea-all mine went in the garbage years ago
  • I've seen them put together to complete the puzzle, then framed.

wouldn't mind having the Yaz puzzle framed

  • mine went in the garbage =(
  • I use them to fill in the extra space of my complete sets. Say I have a 660 count box with a set from any given year, but the cards do not take up the whole box. I use those puzzle pieces to fill in the extra space so the cards don't slide around.

I have seen them graded too.

    Good for you.
  • I have several graded.

Here is the one I like the best...

Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Graders have got to chuckle when that comes across their desk. Atleast it is not the first time Ted's head was in a sealed plastic container. Do you store that card in the freezer?

No grown man over the age of 20 should be asking serious questions about what they should do with Donruss puzzle pieces. If you're under the age of 20, then I apologize.
  • Don't think Donruss made puzzles until '82. In 81 they had gum in their packs. The gum was better than Topps but not as good as Fleer. That powdery Fleer gum was the BOMB.

I put the puzzles together and framed them...also the Yaz, Aaron and Spahn are signed!
I collect Seattle Pilots autographs, 1969 Topps autographs, Signed Mickey Mantle Home Run History cards and have a JC Martin collection (he was my college Baseball coach)

OK now I want some puzzles - like 500 piece Mantle puzzle in 2008 Topps

Cokin75, what you said is actually what made me start thinking about puzzle pieces and ask that question. Either I need better reference books or the puzzle pieces that say "1981 Donruss" are from the 1982 set. I never cared enough to find out, but I am trying to get my collection in some kind of order and just came across a bunch of puzzle sets that say 81 donruss so I just assumed that is what year they where. Anyone care to confirm this?

If someone wants 24 billion 1984D pieces for cheap let me know. I know this is an exaggeration, as I have realistically 30 billion.

I laughed out loud when I read that one.

Interesting. If they were the Babe Ruth puzzles, I'm pretty sure they were in the 82 packs. They were probably printed in 1981 I guess.

    The Ruth puzzle was '82.

My relentless drive to collate things caused me to assemble them into little bricks that made up full puzzles.

I also always tried to set one aside and punch them out to actually, y'know...make the puzzle. Obviously not much of a challenge, but still, I like the artwork.

I love the idea of framing one, especially if it's signed.

I could be mistaken, but I think all three manufacturers had gum in their packs in 1981, which is what brought on a lawsuit by Topps against the other two companies, since Topps marketed theirs as "Bubble Gum Cards". They settled the lawsuit somehow, but the end result was Donruss putting puzzle pieces and Fleer putting the stickers in the packs. I believe the 1982 puzzle pieces had the 1981 copyright on the back of them

  • 1. use them as packing material in sets
    2. throw them away
    3. chew them, honest to God. just a nibble! lol then toss em.

What year was the Aaron puzzle in the set?
Atlanta Braves, Charlotte Hornets, Shawn Kemp, Dale Murphy, and Bobby Engram.

There is a guy that collects them.

Here is a thread he started on a trading site:
    Trading thread

I couple of years ago, I traded him quite a few that I had, except I kept all of my '81s.
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001

You said yours were mint so...

I would throw them away gently rather than really tossing them into the garbage can. Maybe just lay them down nicely in the garbage can.

Could also use them as kindling as I imagine they would remind you of the famous words of Eddie Murphy... "now that's a fire."

'81 was a Babe Ruth puzzle.
