1950's wheat pennies (don't collect coins)...

I have a bunch of 1950's wheat pennies. I never really got into collecting coins (grandfather gave them to me), so figured I'd trade them all for stuff that interests me (like video games or DVD's, or something).

The problem with common wheat cents from the 1950s is, they cost more to ship than they're worth. You might be better off selling or swapping them locally.

  • I didn't know if anyone maybe needed specific ones for their collection, or if there are any rare ones in the '50's. I'd just like to get rid of them for something I'd actually use image

They're pretty much all common after 1934, and most of the 1950s are quite common, and only worth a tiny fraction over face value (say, one and a half to two cents each). Maybe you'd be better off hangin' onto 'em, since they were a gift from your grandfather, after all. You could start a blue folder and see how many holes you could fill up.

(See, you don't collect coins, but I'm recruiting you. Start with some humble wheaties, and who knows where you'll end up. There's my story, 31 years later!) image

Come to think of it, it was 31 years ago this very week- almost to the day. 'Twas Thanksgiving Day of 1976 when I found a 1943 steel cent and a 1936 Mercury dime in my grandmother's sideboard, which she let me keep.

That's one cool thing about grandparents- they usually manage to have some old coins lyin' around. image

  • lol. I found my 1943 S on my own, and I DID start one of those "blue books". I just don't bother anymore, and they are just sitting around. Figured I could slowly get rid of them for what I want (then it would be like my grandfather giving me THAT item) image

Eh, don't give it up now. Nothin' wrong with wantin' some DVDs or video games, but keep the coins, too. Pass 'em on down to YOUR grandkids, when the time comes. Maybe by then they'll be worth a little bit more. Maybe enough so YOUR grandson can sell 'em to get some money for those holographic games or the hoverboard HE wants. image

  • I pay 3 cents each when buying in bulk.

Most dealers will pay close to that.
