Shooting Festival Thalers - my newest endeavor -

I haven't posted over hear on the Darkside for a while, but just wondered if anybody out there can lead me to a good source? I picked up a couple nice examples at the PAN show a few weeks ago, and I like the various designs, especially the cityscapes that many of the Thalers exhibit. I just picked up 2 reference books, which will keep me busy for awhile, particularly since one is written in Swiss! (But it's close to German, and I had 3 years of Duetsch in high school...so I should be able to muddle thru with some effort..)

Any help as far as sources? eBay as good as any...I've started searching there....

THANKS!

Very cool set idea. Good luck! I am a huge fan of the series, as well.

Here's the only one I own:

  • I had 3 of them I bought in 1987, no pics because that was before the digital age! I sold them in 1995 because I wasn't able to find more that were affordable to me at that time and decided that trying to collect them was way out of my league. I was thrilled at the time to get about double what I paid for them 8 years earlier, I got 75 bucks each (in trade) if my memory serves right.

Hindsight is 20-20 so it is said... If only I had them now~! They would be good trade bait for some of the hard to get Weimar Republic 3 and 5 Marks that I need to complete that set. I guess I can't really complain though, what I took in trade has appreciated in value a great well too I am sure at least I think they did! image

  • Thanks for the comments and encouragement - the dealer who got me started said pretty much the same thing - the series was relatively inexpensive, very interesting, and beautifully designed.

TwoKop - That Fribourg Thaler is one of the first 2 Thalers that I purchased - it's the coin that caught my eye as I breezed past the dealers table, with no intention on a buy....but, I sat down, asked for a look at the coin, struck up an interesting conversation, and well, here I am!

That's the GREAT thing about coin collecting - ya just never know what's gonna trip your trigger until you happen upon it.

Thanks to all - I'll check out the links.

    And Happy Thanksgiving!image
