Lowell Signs With Red Sox
UPDATE: ESPN reports that the deal is for $37.5MM, so $12.5MM per year. Lowell took more than $10MM less to stay with Boston.
UPDATE: Rob Bradford says the Red Sox and Lowell have agreed to the parameters of a three-year deal worth between $12-13MM annually. The Sox had set a deadline today for Lowell to decide on their offer, and he took them up on it.
Buster Olney is reporting in his blog this morning that Mike Lowell is close to a three-year deal with the Red Sox. That has to mean he's leaving a significant amount of money on the table to re-sign. Can't see the Sox going past 3/45 on him. There is a conflicting report on this - Rob Bradford doesn't think a deal is close, noting a "healthy divide" between the sides.

Atta way, Lowell.
Turned down 50 mil/4years from the Phillies
Mike already has all the money he will ever need in his lifetime. He wisely realizes that some things are more important than money, like being on a World Series Champion team.
(Are you listening, Payrod?)
The Boston Red Sox are not a mere PIMPLE on the glorious rear end of the great NY Yankees unless they can come up with World Series Championships in 2008 AND 2009. Anything less will render them second class citizens (and thank goodness for that) to the 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 World Champion Yankees.
All these guys who you are so in love with can't match up with those Yankee teams unless YOU WIN the NEXT TWO series.

sucks losing, huh? I recognize that the NYY organization is the most storied in all professional sports, yet I still hate the Yankees and always will. The view these days (from the top) is pretty sweet...and will stay that way until at least next October.

We have to win the next two? Im happy with WINNING two in four years after waiting forever and a day for a World Series! Im also happy that the Yankees have been nothing but a major dissapointment since 2000.
Enjoy and put that Sox Christmas ball on top of the tree this year ....

<< <i>One thing the Red Sox can't match the Yankees in. I think it was the BIGGEST CHOKE in Baseball History in the 2004 ALCS??? >>
Nah..... the biggest choke job in history was the abysmal franchise at Fenway from say 1918 through 2004. Thats 86 years of being choke artists. Imagine being born, living a full life, and then dying all during this incredible choke streak. Hmmmmm which would I rather have. One year in which the Yankees choked while that year has been surrounded by winning ....... OR 86 years of being choke artists. Gee. ..... thats a toughie

I almost forgot to add: Yankees suck.
but wasnt Lowell's power numbers and average a LOT better in Fenway Park than in the rest of the ballparks? Did he know he would only suck if he signed with Philly? Is Fenway Park the only place he will be able to keep the numbers he has? Yes, he is a good fielder but it looks like Lowell NEEDS Fenway Park. Not a dumb choice for him by any means.

you are not wrong, Lowell's swing is built for Fenway, so we like him!
<< <i>This could be Lowells LAST contract, his signing w/the Sox has more to do with his character than anything else IMO. MLB contracts are gaurenteed, so what if he signed with say Philly? Even if he did not produce as well he STILL would have gotten paid! He chose Boston because he is a TEAM player not because he had too. >>
complete hogwash ... Lowell signed because of the GREEN MONSTER. Are you all this intoxicated?

Philadelphia has one of the more hitter friendly parks as well, so I don't think that played a big a factor. Probably just came down to comfort level with the team and surroundings, and a decsion to settle down for an extended period of time.
As a Phillie fan I have mixed emotions as I would have liked to see Lowell in the red and white for the next couple years to help out offensively, especially since it appears Rowand is going to sign elsewhere. However, towards the end of the contract Lowell would probably be a little long in the tooth, and if they can transfer the money that was to be slotted for his services for a top notch pitcher, I think we will be better off in the long run (unfortunately the pickings are slim this off-season).
