Need help with Vintage Leather Football Helmet

Hi, guys I am selling some stuff for an Uncle of mine as a favor. He has this really old football helmet and I can't find out much about it. There are some picts below. The inside says House of Harter, a number which I assume is model 1195 and a size, 6 3/4. I believe it is a HS helmet even though it has a Michigan look to it. It has some wear to it but it is incredibly heavy duty. He bought it in the 70s.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I am going to try and list it on ebay but need more info.
Thanks

It is pretty cool, it might be faded michigan colors the more I look at it.

  • Sweet. I wouldn't mind having one of them but I'm too cheap to go after one.

I have no idea if it's a Michigan helmet or not, but here's a reference for Michigan helmets.

Thanks, it appears to be a knock off of the FH5 model in black and tan which was the standard in 1937. House of Harter may just be the local hardware/sporting goods store where it was purchased it appears.

The helmet pattern looks identical to this photo

  • perfect for an ebay auction.

"My husband recently passed away and now I'm left selling all his old sportscards and memorabilia. I found this yucky old helmet in his display case. There's some writing on the inside of the helmet with the words "insert famous NFL HOFer name here". Since I know nothing about football, I have no clue what it means but I assume it's an old football helmet company. According to ebay rules, I am not allowed to say this helmet is authentic so please bid accordingly. I'm going to start the auction with a very low opening bid of $25,000."

Yeah, I thought about doing the old "it may be a real game used helmet from x college" routine but I decided to try and find out what it actually is before listing. One thing for certain is that it is old and it is real and was most likely used at some point. Where and when are the big questions. I don't think if I just listed it as "old leather football helmet with markings similar to Princeton or Michigan from the 30's" would be misleading. I may have to do more research but I think I might just have to wing it. We could have a contest to guess the final price.

Another thought is that a size 6 7/8 is pretty small for a pro or college football player's head, assuming they are measured similar to baseball hats, etc.

It is 6 and 3/4". That is my Dad's size, peanut head. I am 7 1/8". Which is 3/8" bigger. I said earlier it may be from a HS team due to the strange colors (may be faded yellow and blue but looks more like black and tan to me) and size. I think though haven't our heads grown bigger over the years as well as our waistlines. I bet you won't find many size 54 or higher jersey's back from the 30's.
