Canada 1946 "Hoof in 6" 50 cent variety question

The only picture I can find of this variety is in a "Coins of Canada" catalog (Haxby/Willey). It is described as a deteriorated die, and appears to show a diecrack from the foot of the "4" in the date through the ball of the "6", with the diecrack enlarging as it runs from the "4" to the "6".

I have a coin which appears to be from an earlier state of this die, before the crack is as pronounced- the diecrack is very thin, and just barely crosses the edge of the "6" nearest the "4". There is also a raised area in the upper left inside area of the ball of the "6".

My question- how close does the diecrack have to match the picture in the Haxby/Willey catalog in order to be considered a "Hoof in 6" variety?

edited to add... here's a pic:

Yours is a very early die state with the crack only. But it is not the hoof in 6 variety. That occurs after the die chipped, it should look like the the hoof completely fills the loop of the 6 with the cleff of the toe distinct. Page 389 of the 61st Charlton has a nice large pix of it.

  • Thanks for the info. I have a 62nd edition of the Charlton catalog, but couldn't find the variety listed.
