Your opinion on this Eaby sellers response to my question.

Ok here is the scenario

I will be the first to admit that he does not list on his auctions that he combines his orders. That being said I won 4 auctions of his each one containing 1 ounce ingot of silver. So here I am with 4 ounces of silver and shipping charges totaling $23.80 cents. If you disregard shipping I got all four auctions at 3 dollars below spot. I emailed him and asked that since I won four of his auctions and since all we are talking about is 4 1 ounce ingots that the handling and shipping could not be that much different that one. He emailed me back offering to take 2 dollars off my shipping to make it 21.80 cents or he would pay for insurance of 2.00. As it all worked out I got 4 ounces of silver for 43 dollars and had it shipped for 21.80 cents. Needless to say I will not be buying from the seller again.

here is his email (name withheld for now)

Hi Cliff, normally on precious metals I do not.As you have purchased 4 I will take $2.00 off,or pay for insurance,as I will be sending them in one package.
I know its not much, but METALS are hard to deal with at times.
Thank you, XXXXXXXX

  • Tough. He did not state in his auctions that he would combine shipping, and you should not expect him to do so. Whether, morally, it is the right thing to do or not, who's to say? But you knew in advance that he would not combine shipping.

I stay away from auctions/sellers with high shipping costs. They are just hoping you don't notice so they can increase profit. Probably the reason you won the ingots $3 below spot. To me it's borderline dishonest.

ebay has undergone pains to make shipping prices even more apparent. NEVER assume you'll be able to work a deal. do you think he's sell you the coins under melt and then lose the shipping/handling surcharge?

Terms were stated up front and you're trying to change them after the fact.
  • Well I agree with all of you. He did not offer to combine on his auctions so I get what I get. However, he did not sell 3 dollars below melt the free market did. He made the difference up with his shipping and handling. I guess this is what I get but I will never buy from him again.

Over all that's a pretty cheap lesson. I like the idea of making him ship them seperately though....

The S&H costs (ebay, Teletrade, or any auction) is just another part of the juice to be subtracted from your bid. If you do not do this, then the consequences fall on your shoulders. I don't care if a seller has a $45 ship fee on a $1000 coin. I will just bid $45 less and let the seller pay for the shipping. If I don't win the lot...go on to the next one.

It's also a nice touch to pay for each separately if using paypal-4 times the fees.

I ran into this several times and after getting nowhere with the sellers I did just this,

<< <i>request that they be shipped seperately >>

And they either agreed to ship separately or gave in to a better shipping charge

    It works!!!!
  • Yeah, it's your cheap learning experience to what some buyers do. And a damned cheap one.

However, I love the 4 addresses. It's so much easier to smile and play the game with those who think they can outsmart everyone. Just like telling someone to go to hell in a way that puts a smile on their face as they go.

    Cheers!

I bought 4 different coins last week from a fellow and he not only gave a discount for purchasing all four, but picked up the shipping without me asking.
So there are ebayer sellers who will strike a deal with a buyer to keep a customer. They're not all jerks, but then again, they're not all savvy business people either, as you have witnessed.
