Think I've Spotted a Couple of Altered 42/1 Merc Dimes...

Can anyone confirm? The first one looks especially suspicious. Both coins are from the same seller. Green light to report?

  • What a very convenient spot to gouge out a good chunk of metal on that first one
and I can't even see the supposed 1 on the second.

Yeah, both are clearly fakes. Good catch!
Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.
  • Definitely a bogus pair.
  • #1......ha ha ha

#2....kinda hard to tell since it isn't as prominent on the Denver overdate. But I don't see it from that pic.

#1- I saw this one while surfing the other day...I actually think it may be real (the 4 is doubled in the right direction), but that gouge is a big problem and makes me wonder...If I owned that coin, I would spend the $50 to get it certified before I even considered selling it.

#2- The 4 should be doubled on a genuine '42-D 2/1...I just don't see it on this coin- the die lines give it the appearence of a 2/1 (I guess).

I agree. The P-mint is a genuine overdate, horribly damaged.
The D-mint isn't altered, just struck from a badly worn die, but not the overdate die.

The die was so badly worn that it gives the appearance that there is a "1" peeking out from
under the "2" but that is not the case.
