What Does A Black Marker Across A Wax Box Mean?

I recall some discussion here regarding wax boxes with black marker across the top. To those "wax experts" out there, what does this mean/indicate? Something about the box being pulled from a fresh case? Less likely to have been searched? Etc.? But I'm not sure. Here's an example:

1986 Topps Football Box w/ Black Marker

As always, your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

    X out box?

Scroll down to diamondman's reply as that explains it very well.

  • My understanding is that they are waste, such as retail returns. What this means is they could be made from multiple boxes, although I have heard at times of whole cases having this done to them by Topps as well.

In the magazine market, they remove the front cover with the barcode.

And if a legit box, they have not been searched. They are like an overstock thing. Given the explosion of cards in that era, kind of makes you think about how much was produced when they couldnt even sell out.

i have 2 cases of michael jackson cards when he looked humanimage im not proud or tired
  • You can get better odds (or much worse odds) on a marked x box. There was a rip about a year and a half ago on the boards--an 84 Topps FB X box. Guy got like 6 or 8 Marinos...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

    Jack,
I would not say stay away, I remember buying full cases of x outs , 84,85, 86 ,87 Topps FB for 100 to 200 a case back in the late 80's and early 90's and single boxes and partial cases, more than not the boxes were fine and would yield the stars, but sometimes the packs were rough and would yield only PSA 7 or 8 quality. I would just not pay as much for X outs as I would a fresh mint box from a sealed case. I know this this doesn't help now with the 86 Fb Box at the start of this thread as the auction is over now, but that X out box looked pretty sweet compared to some I've seen. Hope this helps you in the future. also what onlyanumber a number said odds can be better or worse on an X out.

    Dear Diamondman,

Thanks for the further clarification. It is much appreciated. I'm not sooo concerned about pulling a PSA 8, PSA 9 or PSA 10 out of a wax box. I just like to know that I have a decent chance. Someday, I'd like to pick up a 1986 Topps Football box. But I'm not in any hurry. As most people know, those 1986 Topps Football are ridiculously tough. But if you can find a nice one, they sure look sweet.
