New clipped cent for the date set - 2007-D

Courtesy of Fred Weinberg. I somehow missed this when it was on eBay raw, Fred scooped it up and was good enough to give me first shot at it. I may actually keep this one in the holder for a while, since it just came back from PCGS. Everything else for the set I've cracked and put into an archive-quality album.

Not to turn this into another classic vs modern debate, but with the new minting technology in place striking and planchet errors from 2002 and later are truly scarce. I've probably seen more clipped seated dimes than I've seen clipped cents dated 2002 or newer.

Sometimes greatly improved quality control is not a good thing.

Cool clipper! I guess the hardest to obtain coins for your clipped collection is now the yearly updates.

Here is a nickel to go with your cent.image

I am not 100% sure this is a 2007, is there a difference in design between the 2006 and 2007 nickels?

Absolutely true. I've not seen nor heard of any 2006 dated clips from either mint, and the coin pictured above is the first from either Mint I've seen dated 2007. I seriously thought about capping my set at 2005 (other than the 1982 varieties, my set of zinc clips is complete through 2005) because the new errors just don't exist.

One interesting note - there is an eBay dealer located on the west coast who has been the source of probably 75% of the 2001-date cent clips in the market today. The 2007-D above originated in one of her auctions, as did my 1982-D small date zinc clip, which I believe is presently unique. This person is the only consistent seller of zinc clips around; I'd estimate at least half of the zinc clips in my own set came from her. Probably because of her location (and presumably, the location of her source), 2001 and newer Philly cents are extremely hard to find with clips.
