"truth" in advertising ? Apmex

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
I get the normal spam mail from Apmex (bought from them once).
Says "Receive 2 Presidential coins FREE with purchase of collectible album"

Looking at the albums, you can see it is for Dansco, Whitman, and Intercept Shield.
Scroll down further, after looking at the prices for the ones showing 2 FREE (P&D mint) madison dollars.

Scroll down a little further and the SAME (looks the same to me) albums are available for $2 less but don't have the FREE 2 Madison dollars.

That's just cheesy to me. They should just say "add $2 and get the Madison P&D to start you out", but no, they have to be liars and try to have tricky advertising.

Well, Apmex, I have no real desire to deal with you right now. I was looking to get my son an album (not the dansco because of how politically slanted it is, from what members here have said) since we have the first 3 of the year and I will get us the Madisons, but I have no desire to deal with companies that like to bend the truth that much or just plain lie.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I agree. Why does there have to be so much 'deception' in today's advertisement.

For God's sake, just tell me what I'm getting when I'm making a purchase and leave all the 'free' stuff out!! (because it ain't free).

A week and a half ago I bought a non-bullion coin off their web site and paid their full asking price. I charged it to my credit card. They informed me they would have to charge me an additional 3% over their advertised price. I'm still waiting for my coin. Never again will I buy from them.

Went through the same with them, finally got fed up as it hadn't shipped and told them to cancel the order... upon which they wanted a obsurd $25 cancelation/restocking charge. Which after I gave them a piece of my mind was dropped. Insane!!!

I had a similar experience last week, bought a $50 Buffalo gold from APMEX and upon checkout found out I'm paying $43 shipping and handling to make up for "credit card" fees...
Told it would have been about $14 otherwise, with m.o. or check.

  • I have been recommending APMEX here and elsewhere. I have made several gold purchases where the spot price of gold exceeded my purchase price from APMEX before the coins shipped.

The transactions went well and I have PCGS certified gold coins for which I paid less than melt.

The person who recommended APMEX to me also warned me about the credit card fees disguised as shipping, so I avoided that trap by paying with cashiers checks.

Two reasons why APMEX HATES credit cards.

    - Unscrupulous customers will charge back on them when the price of metals ticks the wrong way.
    - Credit card fees cut substantially into their razor-thin margins

You can (carefully) deal with APMEX this way:

    - Buy cerfied coins only (their raw coins are all junk)
    - Use cachiers checks, MO, or personal checks
    - Read the fine print carefully for every transaction

All this being said, I'll not recommend APMEX any more because of their (semi-) deceptive practices.

Great. I sold my modern PCGS set and bought 3 Gold buffalo and 1 Krurrugan from them. I sent my order out tow and half weeks ago. one order sent yesterday and the first one has not been sent. I asked them (thigrd time trying) where is my first order. I sent my payment for both orders on one check. You mailed the second order so where is the first. Thier answer. We are ahead of ourselfs and your order should not go out until Monday the 19th. I said ahead of yourself. You state on your web site it takes 10 days not 18 days and if you send Monday it will be 21 days. How in the He*& can you be ahead of your self. She said to check back with them tonight and it should me mailed. Nothing yet and it still says "Est shipping date Nov 14the".

    NEVER EVER AGAIN.

  • I always get the coins from them right away. They have consistently shipped (insured & certified) the day after receiving the cashier's check.

To be clear from my side of things....when I ordered from them, I knew about the charge for using a CC. Not a problem. Also a charge if you don't order it online buy use their person on the phone to order (even though I had him on the phone due to problems ordering, he made me walk through the ordering online or else he would have to charge me....he was on the phone with me the whole time anyway...weird!)
My order came through with no problems.

My "complaint" is just the deceptiveness, the shadiness, of their advertising.
Don't call it $2 FREE when you jack the price up $2 and have the same thing still available for $2 less, without the 2 free dollars included.

People/companies start doing that and it makes me really wonder what else I might be missing.
