Any good books covering CC coinage?

I would think Rusty Goe would have done something....

  • Rusty Goe's "The Mint of Carson Street" isn't too bad. Amongst a couple issues, it has some very good info in it.

I'm working on a Carson City/Comstock Lode book that I'm hoping to get published by next spring. It's not nearly as long as Goe's book, but contains a lot of material he didn't cover and also includes some corrected info where Rusty made errors.

I have VERY casually been working on a CC Morgan guide. Would love to see something on the CC minors. That area is split between very experienced specialists and collectors groping with little more than guides like Breen and pop reports.

  • Is Howard Hickson's book "The Mint Mark CC: The Story of the United States Mint at Carson City, Nevada" any good?

Goe's "The Mint on Carson Street" is probably the best available book on the topic of Carson City coinage. I especially liked the chapters on the history of the area and the Mint and the personalities involved. There is a date-by-date discussion of each issue, but these are often lacking in numismatic "meat" when compared with other specialty references. Overall, I give it a B+ and would recommend it to any numismatist who has more than a passing interest in Carson City coinage.

There is also the Carson City Coin Collectors of America which publishes a quarterly journal "Curry's Chronicles" that may have info of value to you. Some info on the club is available on the Soutgate Coins (Reno) website.

  • There is a book called "The Crime of 1873" which discusses the Comstock Lode, and I believe the CC mint is mentioned.
