"Evidence" As To How Hard It Is To Find A 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson PSA 10

Of course, I don't know if it is true or not, but the seller here:

Auction for (9) 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson PSA 9

claims that he opened a sealed vending case of 1980 Topps in search pulling (and getting graded) a 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson PSA 10. I'm somewhat inclined to believe him because that Rickey in PSA 10 is particularly though, even though it is a 1980 card.

  • I'm sure that it IS tough to find a 10, but I don't think a vending case is a great place to look, right?

I pulled a PSA 10 Yaz and PSA 10 Fred Lynn from the same 1980 Topps wax pack a couple of years ago. Got so excited that I bought a full box. Got no Hendersons and no 10's. Have also crapped out on 1981, 1982, 1983 Topps. I am going to have to stick to the 60's & 70's! The 80's are T-O-U-G-H!

  • There are 10 10s out of 8603 cards graded (0.116%). Even a 52 Mantle has a higher incidence of 10s than that (0.36%). Ridiculously tough card, makes no sense.

I checked my digital library and found two Rickey's in PSA 10. Those are some sweet looking cards. Which one do you think looks better? Hard to tell given one was scanned with a black background and the other a clear background.

Good call Bosox1976! I completely forgot about 314 or allegedly 314 or purportedly 314 or whatever.

Im surprised none of the big submitters arent out there buying up psa 9's to get bumped to 10s. I could never do that but you know one of them could.

Very tough call. Card on the right has better color (though that could be a result of the pic not the card), but card on left has better centering T/B. I've gotten my fair share of 1980 PSA 10s, including a Johnny Bench and Tom Seaver this year, but they are tough. The key is to get a nice run of cards, as the centering is fairly consistent throughout the box I've found. Chipping along the edges is also a problem. When I renewed my PSA membership a couple years back, I sent 6 1980 cards (including a Henderson) that I pulled from super cello packs. I got back five psa 10s and one PSA 9--needless to say, the PSA 9 was the Henderson...

I have no 411 on the 12213188, but for the 31478470, I have it selling around 1.6.07 for $5,455.00! I would imagine a PSA 10 would go for that much now, if not more. A PSA 9 goes for around $150.00. What a huge discrepancy between a PSA 9 and PSA 10. What is it with these 80s card?!

I would have about a 0.00% chance of buying a PSA 9, cracking it in hopes of getting a PSA 10. But like yankeeno7, I would imagine some submitters would have a decent chance. Just think, at $20.00 per submit (including fees and S/H), you could submit a PSA 9 273 times before exhausting the $5,455.00!

About a month ago 4SC put up several PSA 9s of this card. I guess they tried for a PSA 10 but did not get one. The last PSA 10 sold late this summer for less than $5000. Maybe $2500 or $3500? I think it was a BIN on ebay and went quick to to ZZCar (Ebay ID) and the only person ahead of me on the Henderson Master Set! It sold before I even saw the listing. There have been about 80 PSA 9s (60 since February) added in the last year.

  • I pulled a dead center mint henderson from ONE wax pack last year, had a little piece of fuzz along the edge. The fuzz fell off leaving a little nick....PSA 7 ouch!
