Interesting reply from an Ebay seller that has many cards I'm interested in...but won't take PayPal.

I wont reveal a name, since I still might do business with him, but it was not the response I expected. i apologize for the CAPS lol since its what he typed in.

I simply inquired a. do you accept paypal b. do you combine shipping. (since neither was stated in his auctions/store listings)

""HI LEO, I HAVE PRICED THE CARDS WITHOUT TAKING INTO EFFECT THE PAYPAL COSTS. YOU CAN USE PAYPAL IF YOU'D HELP WITH THE FEES A LITTLE. ITS 3%, AND WITH THE MARGINS ON THE VINTAGE CARDS BEING SO RAZOR THIN IT IS SOMETHING I HAVE TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT

ON SOME OF THE CARDS I HAVE ADDED THE COSTS IN, BY RAISING THE CARDS A LITTLE HIGHER TO COVER IT. I DONT KNOW WHICH WAY IS BETTER?? I LIKE TO OFFER THE CARDS AS AFFORDABLE AS POSSIBLE, AND LIKE A $500 CARD THERE $15 TO PAYPAL (THEY MAKE TOO DARN MUCH MONEY)

IF YOU COVERED THE 3% I WOULDNT CHARGE ANYTHING MORE FOR POSTAGE NO MATTER HOW MANY YOU BOUGHT. I ASSUME YOU HAVE A CONFIRMED ADDRESS??? THAT IS THE ONLY THING I HAVE TO ASK ON THAT

THANKS FOR ASKING AND HAPPY SHOPPING. I SHIP THE CARDS IN 300 CT BOXES SO THEY ARRIVE SAFE AND SOUND

THANKS,
xxxxxxx

So, some cards have PayPal fees bulit in, but if I pay 3% fees on top of the cards, i get free shipping. what a deal! lol. hmm.
what to make of this??

LEo.

  • I've heard of sellers not allowing PayPal on high-dollar cards before, because of fees, but not if he's basically admitting that he puts those costs into the card prices from the start.

I'd say pay the 3% if you MUST have the card, or look elsewhere.

Just send him the check and pay for shipping if you need the card.
  • When eBay first started accepting Paypal, they specifically prohibited sellers for asking for more to cover the Paypal fees. Since eBay bought Paypal, that rule must have went be the wayside...

Honestly, if you want the cards bad enough and you think you are getting a fair deal, I say go for it. The bottom line in any transaction is are you happy with what you got.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

So true but if you can save a few bucks thats good as well. Let us know what happens. image
  • Good day,
I think you should ask for clarification, as clearly (Joke meant), his explanation is muddy. If Paypal is only figured into certain one, which ones?
I must admit I am one of the anachronisms and don't take Paypal as well, he is not lying about the margin on Vintage cards, dismal. I pay Feebay enough without coughing up another 3-4% on top of all the other fees I pay them. !!!! I do make exceptions especially for overseas people and let them pay with PayPal but do tack the 3% percent on, but it is never figured into my selling price.
I really think his answer was polite and you jusy need to followup.

I think he was getting mixed up with his wording. Although his reply for the most part seemed okay. PAYPAL does really nail the seller pretty good. I think he was just being very open about the fees. If it is a decent deal for the cards- I say go for it.

One of the other solutions is a Paypal E-Check. This gets capped at a $5 maximum. They don't advertise this.

In some states it is illegal to charge extra for credit cards. In California it is Ok to offer a cash discount but not to impose fee markups.
  • Send him an E-check from Pay-Pal, I think they are $10 or less no matter the price.

Not that it matters but eBay does have a policy on this.

    Payment Surcharges

Sellers may not charge eBay buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Such costs should be built into the price of the item.

    Not permitted:

Charging an extra fee to use a credit card instead of a check.

Charging an extra fee to use PayPal.
