To those who use all (top) TPGs????

Do you have a favorite for each coin type?

NGC must do a lot of Morgans, just for what Coin Vault sells.
Do you feel they do better on Morgans than other TPGs?

I prefer PCGS for all. I do own some NGC, but I definitely prefer PCGS. I'll buy ANACS and ICG because they're cheap, then cross them to PCGS.

  • The differences between the TPG's are well known by most collectors. I don't care to own any certified coins slabbed by any company other than PCGS.

I admit some affinity for the plastic--and that is because PCGS graders are better at grading than I will ever be.

  • I dont have any bias towards NGC or PCGS. If i see a coin i like and its an NGC or PCGS graded coin i will buy it. If i see a nice piece in say an anacs or icg slab i will also snatch that coin up and just cross it. For me its not about the plastic but about the coin itself. In the end though it needs to be in one of the top 2 holders this way you can expect the highest return.

For US coins, especially dollars, I like modern PCGS grading. The exception to this would be older NGC and ANACS slabs.

For world coins, I much prefer NGC, and have crossed all of my rare and scarce PCGS coins (including my pedigreed coins Eliasbergs, etc.) over to NGC. I've had too many mis-attributed and mis-labeled PCGS world coins and I lost faith. Besides, NGC has far more world coins graded anyway, to include the ultra-rarities.

The couple slabbed ancients I have are ICG, of course, as they are highly respected in this field (and really the only one willing to take on this very difficult genre).
  • I was thinking more along the lines of submitting. Not buying.

Like Merc. go to Anacs, Walkers to PCGS, because you feel they do a better job. OR think you may get a higher grade, with a particular CO.

    Added:

I remember a post from a long time ago. From one of the Merc guys. Saying he was not going to send any more in, because of inconsistancy.

ANACS for coins that won't slab at PCGS. OTherwise, PCGS.

Everything I send in goes to PCGS because there is no comparison to prices realized (overall) for PCGS graded coins compared to the rest. Higher all around.

    This poses a new question:

If it wont slab at PCGS does it belong in one at all?

The past year I have only submitted to NGC. Still working on my mercs, and Barber sets. I do buy though PCGS and Anacs slabbed in other series of coins.

my opinion is that PCGS tends to be "old school" in what they choose to encapsulate which forces collectors like me to choose NGC for their wider variety. to that end, my core collections of strictly U.S. Coinage tends to be in PCGS holders although i also have quite a bit in NGC holders and use that service routinely. for medals and non-standard items i see little choice and use NGC exclusively. one aspect of that choice that i really like is that the same grader has graded all of my items over the past several years. now that's consistency!!!
