BBCE Results - Lots of Scans

Not quite a live rip because I don't have enough will power to open a little bit at a time but I will post scans of what I pulled. I'll start with the best of the 2 packs of '81 Topps I opened.

  • The Bench has a strong shot at a 10...and 10's are tough on the 81's...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

My order of 75 OPC was cut from 3 packs to 2. Thank you Steve Hart for saving me $35.

  • looks like a 3rd grader cut those cards!

what was topps quality control smoking in 1975?

And now what those of you who know I bought some of the '72 OPC's are waiting for. The gum sure was cruel with player selection, also one of the packs had 8 cards and two had 9.

Almost forgot about these. If it wasn't for centering....

  • that gum in the OPC is brutal. easily ruins 2-3 cards PER PACk. ugh.

those 75 OPC are so bad it hurts image

seems like you had fun with the rip. and its a wicked shame on the 72 williams and clemente!

What does it say about OPC that they had either a visually impaired or an apathetic guy cutting their cards for about a decade? I remember thinking when OPC Premier hockey came out that somebody must have finally retired.

Thanks for the scans. Good luck on the Bench. I recently broke a rack case of 81's and had only about 40 cards that might be 10-ish (and I am sure to be wrong on many of them), and very few of them were stars (got lucky on some valenzuela and raines rcs though). TOUGH!

Thanks for taking the time to scan and good luck if you submit image
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I'm interested in 72 opc bob miller if available, also I would be happy to buy the clemente and williams if we can work something out. I already have both with bad centering but oddly they're centered the opposite of yours image

OPC was much more interested in hockey back then as opposed to baseball and mostly made baseball to keep the workers working. They were paid by volume rather than quality and so they had almost no waste cards. Also they cut cards with wire instead of knives, and kept cutting until the wire was so dull that it ripped the cards instead of cutting them. When they couldn't cut them any more they changed the wires.

For me the rough cut makes the cards. I just love the ugly things!

Because several of you were high on the '81 Bench I took a closer look at it. There's a surface wrinkle/loss of gloss (I'm not 100 % sure how to tell the difference if anyone can help) right on his nose. Ouch.

sweet. i really enjoy seeing these wax and rack busts.

that bench is one of the best i've seen in regards to the smudge....nice job.

    Thanks,

  • So much for the theory that all cards in a Pack are Mint
  • I think Ray Charles was in charge of cutting those OPC's, ouch.

    Nice rip though.
  • Good evening,
Sorry to see this, I'm not in favor of your results of course, but it does put mine in a little more perspective. Ouch for both of us. The gum in these is just brutal, and to be honest with you I'm glad Steve is out, as who knows how long we would continue chasing what is impossible, a Super Pack bust from this year !!!!

Lindblad and Fosse looks especially nice, Mint 9 to the naked eye. Those packs had worse gum damage than usual, as did one of Nick's packs, too. I bet those packs came from the same box which was stored in a less than ideal environment (too warm or humid) conditions causing the sugar to leach out more than usual.

Edit: Very nice Miller and Bando, too.

That Bench is about as nice as you will ever see. I've opened several rack boxes and haven't come close to that one.

  • Agreed... I ripped about a box and a half of 81 T racks a while back and didn't get one HOFer or Rookie as nice at that Bench (at least centering wise). In fact, I'm not sure if I even got any commons that nice as the centering in general was pretty bad in the entire lot. Gotta go through them again but my initial impression was that MAYBE there were a few that could possibly get 9's, but probably no 10's unless there are some in the commons that I missed cuz I was too busy hoping to see Ryans, Roses, etc.

Anyway, regarding the OPC's... has anyone here ripped any '78 or '79 OPC's? I've been considering picking some up since I am now fairly convinced that PSA won't mark off of those rough edges.

Hoping to get my 84 Donruss racks in the mail today or tomorrow and will post a live rip thread for them if anyone is interested.
