When you submit a card, who actually does the grading?

After the lambasting I got for the title of my first thread, I've tried to be more circumspect with the title of this one....

My question is:

When you submit an item to PSA, SGC, GAI, BVG, BGS, etc., who actually does the grading and what are their qualifications? Are the graders these companies hire well-known experts or just people off the street? Do they receive any training?

I think people would have a lot more confidence in grading companies as a whole if they knew who was actually grading their cards.

  • I have, but it doesn't say anything about who the graders are or what their qualifications are.
  • if you go to collectors.com and head to the bottom of the page, you see some of the experts at collectors universe and there qualifications

  • Only four of the people listed on there have anything to do with grading sports cards. I'm sure that given the number of cards that are submitted to PSA there are far more people involved with grading the actual cards than just those four people.
  • Please click on the link below to show you the grading process!

When you click on that link, you then have to chose either Cable/DSL, or Dial-up. Hope that helpsimage
  • I can also add they (PSA) have posted here saying they had openings for graders and that if you were interested, to contact Joe Orlando. Never a word on qualifications.

  • SportsItUp,

The video says absolutely nothing about the qualification of the graders.

When I check the Beckett website to view their grader's pics and bios I get this.

I think your link is wrong

Maybe if PSA wants to increase membership, they can make the free gift a calendar of the graders.

Haha, Alfonz, I was thinking the same thing...a 12 month calendar featuring only her. She could even be wearing a really nice '52 Mantle or something.

Reggie Bush for the south region.

And Dick and Tom Van Arsdale (they are twins) for the top region.

  • I would imagine the pay for a grader is not too high, so I wouldn't imagine PSA is attracting the best eyes in the business. Coupled with some of the recent questionable PSA 10's and it is safe to say it is a crapshoot at best.

    I give her a 10 and she gives me a straight 9......

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?
