James Spence, More Bad News For JSA
Many autograph collectors and dealers are still talking about James Spence’s appearance on Fox News where Spence authenticated forged autographs as genuine. The autographs were forged by graphic artists at Fox News and when the autographs were brought to Spence’s office he convincingly told the reporter that an autograph was genuine but all the reasons why it was genuine. A most embarrassing moment for Spence and the authenticating trade.
Apparently Mr. Spence has not learned much about dealing with the news media. Earlier this week on Sunday, New York Channel 9 a similar report was aired at 10:30pm. The story ended up portraying Spence’s authenticating company in very bad light. James Spence had a booth at a local New Jersey sports show offering on-site authentication. A woman reporter went undercover and got an in person signature of Sal Bando. She then went outside with her camera crew and on a blank Bando photograph forged Bando’s name on it. They went and submitted the photo with the forged signature to JSA Authentication “Follow The Leader..”
The Spence authentication team only looked at the signature for a few seconds an determined the signature on the photograph was genuine. JSA also issued a certificate of authenticity for the signed photograph.
Bando was interviewed about this incident and expressed surprise that something like this could happen.
Mollie Ann Bricigliano promoter of the show was also interviewed and was stunned by what took place. She was nearly speechless and stuttered through the interview. She said “I don’t know what to say other than I am sorry and embarrassed.” She added: “I can only hope that plenty of people saw this and maybe will think less highly of these authenticators.”
Afterwards, James Spence when asked about this latest fiasco had no answer except to say he was sorry.
www.autographalert.com has seen the demise of several autograph authenticating companies during the last few years. As collectors become more educated about these so-called autograph authenticating companies the less they will use there services. With the extremely high volume of mistakes made by authenticating companies many believe if you se an item that comes with a COA from an authenticating company, a red light immediately goes up as that item should get a second opinion from a reputable autograph dealer. Word has been spreading rapidly amongst collectors and in cases such as this we would have to believe that the above show promoter has learned her lesson the hard way and will not be renting space to authenticating companies in the future.
We have also found that some high profile self promoting autograph authenticators have been traveling around the country to card shops trying to be the shops authenticator. The reputations are starting to follow these authenticators and recently one of the major card shops in Florida, who hold regular private signings, told the authenticator there was no need for his services. We have also been told that collectors are beginning to boycott shops who use autograph authenticators. Most say, “I need the shop owner to guarantee what they sell, I don’t need an opinion or guess from someone who is not competent authenticating autographs.”

PSA has graded numerous counterfeit 1988 emmitt smith gator cards.. that was a mistake
Can you see where I'm going with this? They are humans and not 100% error proof but a damn better option than buying raw items from some joker on ebay.
Where I do have a problem is there whole marketing strategy is.. Every autograph is fake unless you pay us to look it over.
I have a sweet item signed by the inductees at the opening of the HOF. Obtained by John Kieran ( New York Times reporter) and came with an on-line authentication from Sotheby's... can't get Spence to authenticate...I'm screwed.
No one can guarantee a signature, and there will always be mistakes. The question is who's judgement would you prefer. I think the obvious is that Spence is the most respected authenticator in the business, and I would prefer an autograph authenticated by him than any other, including myself. Even if I knew an auto was authentic because I saw it signed, it would have little value with my own authentication, and would prefer the card to be authenticated by Spence.
As for the sal brando, if he is signing at the show, and someone takes a card signed by him outside and signs it themself, the best judgement would be that it was authentic, as no one in there right mind would pull such a stupid stunt for a useless autograph. It obviously was just a ploy to discredit, and the same could be said about ANY legitimate authenticator...just plain nonsense and stupidity.
www.autographalert.com is registered to Steve Koschal who (surprise!) is also the principal of an Autograph Authentication Company.
other than certified auto's from packs. I've had my problems in
the past (several occasions) with PSA/DNA.....authenticating the
worse Martin Brodeur 8X10 autos, and GAI rejecting 8X10 autos
of players I got in person. I've never used JSA, but it seems that
it's all a guessing game. Once disappointment and the lack of trust
hits you; you're done.
<< <i>Autograph Alert makes for good reading but do some research before you believe everything you read on the Internet.

How conveinient. Discredit the competition.
Who the hell is Sal Bando anyway ??
Not for nothing , these guys got to try to stay ahead of all the technological advances and all the scum bags of this earth that try to get over , they should have arrested the "Graphic Arist" for forgery !
I'm certain most of their studies are on the signatures that would tend to bring in the most money too, not Sal Bando , he probably didn't even want to break the kids heart for a lousy 5 dollar sig .
Having said that , I suppose these people serve some kind of purpose on this Earth , they try to keep the hobby in some kind of check and I guess that type of thing is going to be done from time to time .
Interesting article , for the second time . . .

Obviously not an A's fan, TNT...
Bando batted cleanup for the A's usually behind Reggie Jackson. He was the team captain and while not flashy, steady as they come at the hot corner. Bando's stats don't tell the whole story. He was for sure an integral part of the A's 1971-75 dynasty before cheapskate owner Charlie Finley broke up the team in 1976.
I will also bet that most (99.5%) if not all sports autograph authenticators don't have a college degree in Handwriting analysis (very small field). Because most Handwriting analysis experts are employed by the government (FBI,CIA ect ect) and make more money than most sports card companies are willing to pay for their services.
I remember the Upper Deck Co. making the pitch if it wasn't U.D. authenticated it was probably fake along with a few other companies in the early 90's that started this mess if it doesn't have a Coa then it is fake. I have quite a few HOF autographs that I will inevitably end up sending to PSA/DNA to have them put their stamp of approval on (only to maximize the amount of money I get) even though I know they are real because I got them in person myself. I just hope I don't get the grader of death who decides well today I am only going to pass 8 out of every 10 items as real.
the other items can be resubbed later (ha ha) (bullcrap) . I guess with my other autographs (non HOF's) I will just go out and set them on fire because without that almighty COA they must be Fakes. There is alot of fakes/scam artists out in Ebay and the only way to buy autos is the ones that companies (Topps, U.D. ect ect) put out or the one with Coa's (PSA/DNA, JSA) or know the person you are buying from and there are a few on Ebay that I would buy off of without a stupid piece of paper (loa,coa,/toilet paper) that I know are legitimate/honest dealers. In the end it all comes down to your decision on who to buy from and who to trust and if you don't feel comfortable
with the item whether it has a LOA or not. RUN as fast as you can away and buy something else another day. just my 2 cents
Tenace 4 hrs only hit 5 in reg season
Bando in the 7th game 1 rbi oh yea (almost forgot) scored the winning run on some double that the catcher (Tenace) hit.
2 players not in HOF so if u don't have a coa or loa just burn their autographs (now).
