Book on Chinese Coins

Does anyone know if a book ( In english ) on Chinese dollar coins has been produced?

I've never seen one. Silver Crowns of the Far East by M. Oka, published in 1966, has fairly good coverage of the first half-century of Chinese dollars, but it's mainly in Japanese, except for captions in English.

Very few books written in English exist for Chinese coins. The Standard Catalog of World Coins, Krause Publications is probably the best bet for dollar coin info.

Of the few books written in English that exist, the best ones cover Chinese cash issues of which there are a zillion types.

Boy oh boy , in my opinion there's a need for one. I think they're neat as heck and am spending some time and $ on them. I'd like to find a major show in Asia and attend it. Where? HK? Bangkok? What baffles me a little is I've bought a few on ebay of all places and they were shipped from China. I wouldn't have thought it was legal to ship "antiquities" out of the country.

Anyone know who is considered the Wayne Miller of Chinese Dollar coins?

The Tokyo International Coin Show, held in early May, is probably the biggest and best attended show in Asia.

I've never been to Japan and I'd like to check it out. Ideally though , I could find a large show that's not TOO far from Saigon. I could convince the Wife that "we're" going to see the folks, and go, then leave her in Saigon with her folks and I go to HK, or BKK . Preferably BKK as it's only an hour and a half ish from SGN. image

I lived in Thailand for 5 years and never heard of a coin show there. Perhaps things have changed.

Hey I lived in Koh Samui for a year. I was hoping there would be one. There's a big jewelry show in BKK, hence my hopes. Alas, if not then my hopes are dashedimage

Some libraries might have these two:

Zhang, Huang - Silver Dollars And Taels Of China (1981)
Kann, Eduard - Illustrated Catalog of Chinese Coins (1953), republished 1966

Kann's book is quite large and detailed.
Even describes Chinese dollars struck at US mints.

Be very, very careful buying anything out of mainland China on eBay! Chinese coins, American dollars, Spanish dollars, you name it - The Chinese have taken the forgery of old coins, particularly dollar-sized coins, from a cottage industry and raised it to mass production levels. And it's perfectly legal over there, too - the only coins it's illegal to counterfeit are Communist China issues. Republic, Empire and foreign coins are fair game.

There probably are some genuine, honest sellers of genuine, honest coins in China. But the fakemasters far outnumber them on eBay.

While fakes continue to flood into the market, demand (and price) for rare Chinese coins will remain low. Any modern English-language book on Chinese dollars had better have a nice thick section on now to tell the fair dinkum from the bogus.

My local library was able to borrow both books from other libraries by a library system called "Link+".

Talk to a librarian about it.

    Books:
Zhang, Huang - Silver Dollars And Taels Of China (1981)
Kann, Eduard - Illustrated Catalog of Chinese Coins (1953), republished 1966

Can you show the cover of the Zhang Huang's book? If it has a Chinese title I might be able to find it in China.
    Thanks

Cool. It's good to see PCGS penetrating the Chinese market.

There was a nice sized auction in Hong Kong recently, with some stunning rarities. The star of the show was a Chinese dollar (don't remember the year), but it was NGC MS63 and fetched something like $115k; a very nice coin!

Many Chinese have a glut of disposable income (surprise, surprise, it is our money!) and are buying up coins. some of their coin shows make our FUN, Long Beach and ANA shows look tiny by comparison. I was over there on business a few months back, and stopped by a smaller show. They had 80,000 people attend the first day I was there.
I do a good amount of buying from British dealers and British ebay, and many have admitted to me that their best material is going to China. I have too witnessed this, as i bid strong money (and lost!) to a couple of deep pocketed Chinese buyers.

Sure, there are tons of Chinese counterfeiters, as can be expected with a huge population and a still developing economic system; but there are also a ton of collectors with honest mindsets like ours.
