PSA values vs. SGC

I've noticed a lot of high end vintage cards in SGC holders. I was wondering if they hold their value as much as PSA? SGC certainly has the most attractive slabs of any grading company. I also like the idea of having fractions of a grade instead of PSA going in one whole number increments.

SGC is coming on, no doubt about it. PSA still has market share but............ chaz
  • They both represent the high end of grading services. In reality we collectors need them to be competative and stable so that they compete for our services. It keeps them from monoplizing the market and ultimatly becoming complacent.

Vintage football HOFer's in PSA and SGC sell for pretty much the same. Due to the set registry, PSA has the edge in regards to commons.

    Exactly Art!

I sure hope SGC sells well, I have an SGC graded 1 poor 1950 George Mikan Menko card at auction with Mastronet. Its gona be in the December auction, so lets keep our fingers crossed, LOL. I think my card is better off in a SGC slab, rather then PSA, I think anywayimage

I have NO problems putting an SGC card in my collection. Sure I have 90% PSA but the other 10% is SGC. NO Beckett, BCCG, GAI here. In fact, just a couple of nights ago I did a BIN on a 1968 Topps Mantle SGC 84 (psa 7 standard). The card looks AWESOME! I cant wait to get it in hand...the centering sold me.

    I completely agree with that.

  • Good day,
I have always thought the SGC holder was head and shoulders better looking than the PSA, but cold hard facts are the same card in my experience will generally bring 1-2 times more money in the PSA holder.

With services like VCP it's very easy to research any cards realized prices with each grading company and see how each does.
What that doesn't tell you is if it's the same card- a SGC 5 (60) may not be the same card as a PSA 5.
I would agree that the gap has closed greatly, and I expect that to continue. In some cases (many pre WW1 sets, and virtually all 19th Century) the orders are reversed.
For all but black bordered cards SGC's holders are a lot more aesthetically pleasing that PSA's, although I think Globals beat both of them. And the fit seems to be a lot better as well. The flips on each companies holders leave a lot to be desired, and could benefit greatly from having a graphic designer redo them.
Either way, competition between the 2 benefits us the most. I hope both stay healthy.

  • Am I the only one that doesn't like the SGC holders? I think the company is fine but their holders look and feel cheap. I haven't had a lot of experience with graded cards but the two that I have had that were graded by SGC I couldn't wait to pop out. Both cards kept sliding out of the black insert and getting pinned between the insert and the case. I was afraid that the edges of the cards were going to get damaged. The black insert does look nice, though, as long as the card is actually where it is supposed to be.

Are you kidding me??? I just got in a shipment of SGC and I hate to say it, but they are definitely nicer than the PSA holder. Not cheap at all. It is quite a shock to me that we are even comparing the 2 companies. It is a testament as to how far SGC has really come. chaz

There are pros and cons to both. I do like the black insert to offset white border cards. However, I think that overall PSA holders feel like they would protect a card better. They just seem to be better made. It would be nice if they could develop a black insert as well. As long as it actually held the card in place.

I still don't understand where you are coming from on this. I have a PSA holder and an SGC holder in my hand right now and the SGC holder is much thicker and streamlined than the PSA holder. It seems to me that the PSA holder is a bit more flimsy than the SGC holder although the PSA is a beautiful holder as well. Maybe you are comparing it to an older SGC holder? chaz

That very well could be. Like I said. I'm new to the grading game and have only had 2 SGC holdered cards. I wasn't aware that there was an older version of the slab. The ones that I had seemed to be very flimsy and could easily be cracked open. So if the new slabs are more sturdy than that is great. Maybe I'll leave the cards in those slabs. image

  • I have several nice SGC vintage slabbed cards. It all depends on the card..........on the whole i think PSA sell for about 10-20 % more than SGC, but like i said all depends on the card.

Agree with the above poster and I also agre that the SGC holder was sturdier then PSA's 'tamper evident' version.

I've found both SGC's and PSA's holders alarmingly easy to crack open.
Except for the flip, I like GAI's the best- thinner, and I really like having the info on the top edge of the card- makes it really easy to pick the card you're looking for out of a huge stack.
SGC's are nice, but too thick.

  • My PSA cards tend to slide around in the holder way more than my SGC cards.
  • I tend to go with PRO. They only grade MINT untrimmed cards. image

Actually, I like SGC and PSA. Both top notch but the SGC holder is what gets me.

  • I finally submitted some cards to SGC a few weeks ago. After meeting with one of their reps at a show and checking out their online population reports and invoice tracking system, I was pretty impressed. In short, I, too, am very happy to have both PSA and SGC around! Hopefully, the competition will be good for everyone who is submitting.

The standard SGC holders are annoyingly wide. You can typically get as much for a SGC card as you can a similar PSA card, you just have to ask for it vs. letting it run on auction.

compare the two with a white background...the only reason the psa looks decent is the black background....in hand sgc much nicer.
  • Interesting discussion.

I personally prefer PSA, but SGC is fine too. Funny how the market for cards is much like that for coins - PSA/PCGS vs SGC/NGC. Both being strong benefits everyone image

Commons in SGC holders do not sell as well. PSA registry is too dominant for SGC to ever catch up.
