What is special about the 2001s SAC $

Batman23Batman23 Posts: 4,999 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was looking at the PCGS price guide and saw that the 2001-S proof Sacagewea dollar was listed at many times the value as the dollars of other years. I was thinking low mintage and looked at the Pop reports. The 2001-S dollar has the highest number of graded Sacs with almost 10,000 graded PF69. Although the PF70 count is not very high (59) it is not the lowest (2000 has 58). I do not see conditional rarity here. I can't see a mintage rarity with over 3 Million minted. Does anyone have any knowledge about why the price guide shows this as being worth so much more than the others? I mean $38 in PF60 for a 2001 is way off of the $2 for all the other years in PF60.image

Can't help, but a PR60 would be a conditional rarity!

If you would pay the $ I am sure I could locate (make) a couple for you.image
  • Hello,

I've seen this exact question on the boards before. I can repeat the answer for you.

The 2001 Proof Sets had different rules for distribution. The result was the sets were scattered and dealers didn't have stockpiles to pull singles from.

*My speculation starts here* The dealers kept raising the prices they were willing to buy and sell the proofs for. Prices rose until supply became adequate.

My opinion is the 2001-S Sacs are not rare and as individuals with a few see the prices and attempt to sell them, the price will drift downward.

I also think the 2001-S Sacs have a predisposition towards turning dark and that has made the nice ones more valuable.

    Cheers

  • The pops are so high because it's the only date worth sending in to be graded.

"The pops are so high because it's the only date worth sending in to be graded."

That is part of it (although there are other dates worth sending in). But, try making a "PCGS perfect" 2001-S Sac. The coins are generally riddled with small problems (marks, stains, spots, abrasions) preventing the coins from qualifying as a PCGS 70. Which is why the coin has moved up in price from its roughly $750 value of a few years ago to more than double that now. Some suggest the coin could actually approach a 3x move up from its prior level of a few years ago - based upon what the 2000-S coins are currently trading at. We'll see. I did just notice that one traded at public auction last night for $2,184 so it is just about there already!

  • I am far from being an expert on this topic, but I don't happen to see anything particularly special about the 2001s date. They seem to command an "across the board" premium that is (in my opinion) completely undeserved. Yes, the PCGS PR70s are hard to come by (I sold one a few months ago for $2250 on ebay). But how does that account for the higher than normal price point for all of the other grades, and even in raw form?

There is no "rarity" for 2001s. The 2004s is more "rare" than the 2001s. So why isn't the 2001 priced like "all of the others" ? Why isn't the 2004s the one that commands the premium?

I don't "get it" either... My understanding is that by 2001, the mint lifted the 10-per-household limit that they set on the 1999 set, so what gives?

As per the answers above, initial distribution differed but as these coins are more fully distributed by the secondary market, these prices will come down - at least through PF69. They already have if you watch the 'bay or Coin World ads...

It just seems like after 6 years and no acutal rarity they should not be worth any more than the others. From what I read now is a time to sell them, not buy them. I would guess that in another 10 years they will be priced about the same as the others.

    Thanks for the replys.
