silver south africa penny

In running through some of my older coins that i had collected back in the 60's i have what appears to be a 1960 1d from south africa. According to my krause they were minted in bronze. This appears to be plated in silver. Any comments

Many Brit coins of this era (pennies) were silver plated as well - perhaps there was a market for such. You could simply weigh it although I scratched through the plating on the edge of mine.

  • It's more likely a thin silver 'wash' and it wasn't done at the mint, btw.

Unless a coin is an extremely scarce issue, alterations done outside the mint almost always result in the complete loss of any numismatic value. There may be some value as a novelty, but then again, maybe not.
