Jefferson Dollar FDI variety coin message

I havent purchased anything from this person, and it looks like he got my email address from the PCGS Registry sets. the message is as follows:

Hi, My name is ____,
I have all the FDI Jefferson coins for your set registry, with PCGS......If you want to get any of them to complete your set....let me know....you can call me if you want to talk....xxx-xxx-xxxx, Thanks, _____

I know of one person who has been trying to sell these types of coins on Ebay. I have also checked his completed auctions, and have seen evidence that the use of a shill is highly likely. Real winners of these coins have paid way too much because of this shilling. I dont know if this is the same person, and I dont know if others are receiving this email. The majority of the coins the seller had are BU and 64 grade.

I wanted to make sure that registry set members know that if they want to have these coins, and in high registry set quality grades, please check with Mitch at Wondercoin. Not only does he have the partial and weak edges in the Jefferson, in both First day Issue and non FDI, he also has the top pop coins. I have dealt with Mitch many times and his prices are market prices, and they dont involve shills.

Kaelasdad - First, thanks for the recommendation. One only needs to look at my entire run of current ebay auctions (a total of -1-) and total number of auctions that are not at a fixed price (-0-) to confirm no shilling there. And, I say that with sadness "in my voice" (nothing to do with the shilling issue) because next month would have marked -10- years on ebay for me. And, IMHO, ebay really blew it earlier this year with their new rules, which were made with the best of intentions, but beyond "extreme" and, frankly, "deal breakers" for me to want to do much business with them any longer. I got an email today that they shut down nearly 70 auctions of a very honest ebay seller.

My ebay business is off approximately as much as 95%-99% year over year!! And, I am having a decent year this year otherwise. Their loss and I believe it (their treatment of coin sales now) is already having a small impact - just track their stock price, which I do.

Anyway - Kaelesdad - thanks for the heads up.

Is like the vacumn salesman coming to your door unannounced?

I've pulled my certified coins off of eBay with the new rules as well. With time I'll probably get into a routine of having a few up there but much smaller than before. Probably just the few that have been in inventory X months without selling elsewhere. For now, I'm using the extra time and money it would take to comply with the new rules to simply sell elsewhere (and it is working nicely).

  • Agreed - I've been doing backward flips to get my listings up to code, but either eBay or somebody with too much time on their hands keeps finding a reason to bring them down.

New rules are almost enough to drive a man to drink.
