Fake Autographs

Its obvious that the market is loaded with fake crap.. Its probably worse than people are making it out to be.

My question is Does anyone know of any instance where a Topps certified autograph, suchs as those on Topps Fan Favorites cards, has been deemed not authentic?

How does Topps certify the autos on thier cards? Does Topps supervise each signing?

It also proves that the Authentication companies are far from perfect. I just saw Spence a few months ago. I had a Ripken ball that he didn't authenticate last year and I tried again and it passed. I know it's real since I got it myself. It pays to be an informed buyer and not to rely 100% on a COA.

Bob...Can you post a scan of this ball? Just curious why anyone would pay (n this case twice) to have an item authenicated when they got it in person?

    Thanks

This is exactley why the only autos i have are from packs, or signed in person.

    Thanx for the link dtkk49a!

    It was an interesting read.

I once read an article that Topps and UD both do their signings in person - then there was a debacle where UD - I believe - gave a FB player - can't remember who - a stack of cards to take home and sign; well he gave them to his girlfriend to sign!!!!

    So - I can't say fer sure?

<< <i>She then went outside with her camera crew and on a blank Bando photograph forged Bando’s name on it. They went and submitted the photo with the forged signature to JSA Authentication “Follow The Leader..” >>

Spence messed up bigtime on this one.

I think it was based on assumption I would guess - first he probably knew Bando was signing and second and importantly - probably was predisposed with the notion: who would forge a Bando?!!

Doesn't make it right - and as in all authentications - no matter who does it - in the end all ya got is an opinion whose sole value is based on collective faith.

Right now - PSA/DNA still commands faith at auctions - and faith may have no basis in reality if ya know what I mean?

A friend of mine gets a lot of the Topps cards signed and either he or his son sits there with the player while all the cards are signed. On one trip to Spring Training I got to do one myself for AJ Hinch of the Oakland Athletics. Almost got to do Tejada (this was before anyone knew who he was, but Miggy didn't want to sign that day). Hinch was great, he did 500 signs in about one hour. At the time Topps let the player keep any five of the cards for himself and we even had to make sure the pens got back to Topps. I didn't know this 'cause AJ wanted a couple of the pens so I let him have them. Got into a little trouble with my friend though.

I'd be willing to bet the "sticker" sigs are not witnessed.

  • That was an interesting article. But that is one angry website! Is there anyone they do like? It seemed like every article posted was about fake this or forged that!
