My son in law just brought me 100 ancient coins

I don't know anything about them. They still have dirt on them,he told me to soak them in olive oil which I am doing now. I think he buys them on E bay in bulk lots for under a dollar each. I think that is pretty neat to be able to purchase coins 2000 years old for just a few cents each even though they are not that great looking they have a lot of history. Sorry for the post about ancients here but I don't collect them and have not been on the other forum.

  • OT or not-coins are coins as far as I'm concerned. I agree it sounds interesting to see coins so old-wonder about the history and how many times they have changed hands, etc. Unfortunately for me, out of 3 sons and 3 son in laws-not a one is interested in coins.

  • mY Nepew and I have purchased the same type of lots on ebay and I got 2 silver coins out of 45, also they are not in bad shape,I used a electro cleaning process, with a 9 volt battery, and a chemical called TSP you can buy it at Wal-marts for under $3.00 a box. look in the hardware dept. it takes less time to clean them up than the olive oilimage and it leaves a good finish on them.MOJOimage

I use electro cleaning on any really crusty ancients also. I don't like having to buy 9V batteries over and over though. My solution was to cut up an old computer power supply (its easy to rig it without having it in the computer). First I soak them in olive oil to loosen up any easy to remove gunk then place them in the electro bath of distilled water and base material of choice (have used salt, baking soda, etc...). I've had some pretty good success.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.
