Edmund Moy - What would you suggest a new (young) collector collect and why?

He responded to something like that in a recent NN I believe (50th Annv issue).
He said the new Presidential dollars.

I could accept that. New (young) collectors and something easy to get.

He said it was for learning.
I can accept that.

He said it would help taxpayers or something.

That is utter BS to be using as an excuse to collect!!!! I could care less about seignorage as a reason to collect a certain series. That one comment (and everything else going on with the mint) is enough to make me want him to be replaced.

If he couldn't even articulate a good reason to collect without tossing that "taxpayer" BS in there, he needs to be replaced.

Sorry for the rant

  • There is another reason why I don't like his answer. These dollars, for the most part, do not circulate. Young collectors need to learn how to grade at least one series and, in the process of doing this, learn lessons about luster/strike quality/etc. that will serve them well later on. I would suggest Lincoln cents (1950-present, no expensive varieties) or Roosevelt dimes.

Yeah, I agree with you on that as well. Up until I saw the "interview" with him, I had no problems with him, even with some of the hokie decisions I have seen. This was just stupid though.
