The Denver Mint hates Sacagaweas!

When it comes to the Sacs, Denver is consistantly the worse. The coins look like they were slid across the floor and the spotting on them is the worse I've seen yet. I did end up with a really cool find and it would have been even cooler if it had been a Presidents coin with the edge writing in place. image

    Great find!

I have been working all year on trying to make a Denver 07 Sac in MS68. So far - just some MS67's to show for the effort (and coin is still pop -0-) No surrender though!!

The Denver Mint recently installed a large corridor between the main press room and other parts of the building. The corridor has a steel floor with thousands of tiny burrs and spikes on it. The newly struck perfect coins are dumped on the steel floor and employees walk over them on their way to the cafeteria and restrooms. After being thoroughly mixed and stomped on for a few days, the scratched and nicked coins are packaged in rolls and bags of $250 for sale to happy collectors. Near holidays, the mint Superintendent adds some sand to the steel corridor for extra texture. Some employees don’t like the sand. Said one, “Blasted sand – gets all over the place. Found some in my bologna and cheese sandwich yesterday!”

(I’m told there has been some discussion about doing this with proof coins – to make “blasted sand proofs” for collectors, but that can’t be confirmed.)

Consumers take more kindly to coins after they are "broken-in"
When they are used thus the public is impressed that the coins
    have "been a...round!"

The Sacs are great coins but will never be something the public embraces simply because no one wants a $1 coin over a dollar bill. Kill the $1 bill and then it would be different. I love to spend Sacs because every one who gets one is happy to have it and has never even seen one before.
