.......in the event that they dump Mike Nolan?
On the surface it seems like it might be a fit, given Shanahan's prior connection with the 49rs. Shanahan would also probably like the chance to coach the 49rs back to a winning team. While he has success with the 49rs he could also enjoy the fact that across the bay his ex employer Al Davis would have to deal with a coach he fired (and has since lost to consistently) having success while the Raiders continue to stink up the joint.

I hear that Shanahan still has it in for Al Davis, such a coaching job might appeal to him.
