For those of us without a VDB matte and were thinking you would score a low grade one for under $10,000...Rest assured it will never happen, unless the Cherry Picker Gods are with you.

Bob, I have to agree with your comments. I got mine in 2002 as a ANACS 63RB in the April Central States Heritage auction. It had that spot over Lincoln's head that really didn't bother me. I got it for $1955 including the load and I had bid to $2500. I WANTED that coin for 8 years and I was darn lucky to get it. It took awhile, but PCGS crossed it at PR61RB which again I was happy to accept. Today the PCGS market value is $2600 but I kinda think that there are people out there who would pay me more if I were selling. I personally have not seen or heard of ANY legitimate 1909VDB Matte Proof Lincoln cent being sold or offered for sale at less than $4,000 since my purchase. Steve
As I shared with Mike, Any Matte that came up for auction right now as a PR 61, would be so over bid because of demand. That is why I think it would crack $10,000. It is a hopeless scenario to think this coin is going to go down in any grade..its just not going to happen. So anyone who knows the value and rarity of this coin is going to vote with their wallet, and not under the premise that another will come along soon.

This discussion got me to thinking what kind of price increases have we seen with the 1909VDB Matte Proof Lincoln cent in recent years. Well, I just happened to have an old PCGS price sheet from July, 2004 stuffed in the basement. Here are the price comparisons with today's online list.
Mike, part of the problem is that PCGS has only graded 2 VDB Matte proofs as 63BN and ANACS has only graded 2 VDB Matte proofs as 63BN. NGC lists NO 63BN's so we have a total population of maybe 4 assuming none got crossed. Of course you can take a shot on a RAW one but be sure to see the three key diagnostics. This has a lot to do with why an average collector with modest financial budget has a very tough time getting one of these coins.
I believe that with a probable total existing population of about 200 almost ALL are in the hands of collectors or a few dealers who are saving them for their own personal collections. The only real source is a major auction or private treaty. I have not seen a slabbed one offered in any print ad in a number of years.
These assumptions are different for the 1990 no S proof. There, I believe, are about 200 in existence also. But, there are more of them in hands of dealers who will sell at the right price. Now is the time to get a 1990 no S before collectors get them all like the 1909VDB. Steve
Brian sent me this link to the Heritage Fun auction where a PCGS PR64BN 1909 VDB will be up for auction around January 12th, 2008. That coin is currently listed at $7,750 in the PCGS price guide but it may be the last best chance to get one for under $10k. Thanks Brian for pointing this one out to me and the readers of this thread. Steve
Hi Steve,
Collector will have their chance in this January's Heritage FUN auction where a 1909 VDB graded by PCGS as PR64BN is up for grabs. They just posted the image today and here it is.
My heart just sunk reading this...my only chance and I agree with Bob. The more affordable collector grade tend to bring more because collectors like me know its their only chance to acquire one. IE: $13K vs $41K and $1
I'm sure it will go in a well deserving collection, it'll be fun to watch anyway. Who knows, I might hit the lottery by then.
Thanks Brian & Steve for the link.
Heritage could have dusted it off before the pic, or are those fibers inside the holder?

63BN would sell easily at 64BN price and so on....I'm only pointing out the BN because my wallets in the RD.
The Price Guide may have risen on these, but its still far behind, especially as HOT as they are now. And that goes for all the other dates as well.

I believe there was a PCGS 64BN that sold last year for about $15K. I forget which auction house it was.
