What do you think of this 1876 twenty Cent Piece? Direct opinions welcome. Please include Grade, physical properties, toning if questionable, any BodyBag issues you may see. Would you buy it? If so what would you pay?

I have an opportunity to buy it and this is the pictures I have. Please help me look at this with the critical eye of an experienced collector. Thank you for your opinions.

Looks flat as far as luster goes...

I do not care for the coin. To my eye, it looks cleaned and retoned in an unattractive way. I would pass.

I was wondering about that. Thanks for the reply.

Nice strike, but ugly toning. Possibly retoned like others have said. I would wait for an original piece, they're out there.

I agree. My first thought was that it had an "odd" look to it. I'd pass.

I think that it is a bad image, but it does look lifeless. But what a great issue the 1876 20C is! I would buy it at the right price, but it would be around VF money, assuming this piece has problems.

It's better than not having one, depending on the price, but it sure looks strange.

Been cleaned at one time, like most silver of the era. I like the 1876 20c categorically. This one I'd have to see in hand. It might slab...AU58 as a guess, maybe AU55. I had one like that with a bit more life to it that I paid $400 for in '96. It's one of those coins that doesn't seem to appreciate much even though it is a better date in the (short-lived) series and a popular 19th type coin in a grade that is common for type sets.

Walk away...it has been cleaned and and it has retoned (on its own or with a bit of help). There are nice 76-P coins out there, be patient.

Edited to add...the coin would grade as a 55 or 58, based on the images and depending on what it looks like in hand.

Unless the sell price is melt, I'd pass. Cleaned and retoned like everyone else said.

I do not want a cleaned one that is going to BB. I did not care for the toning on the front anyways. The price tag on it is $600. I will just keep looking. Thanks for the help.

As a collector, you need to be happy with your coins, so wise decision. However, from a dealer standpoint, that is not a bad price for a 76 20C. That is about what problem-free circs are going for. The price on this issue can only go up and up, regardless of technical grade.
