OT: Worst State Quarter Ever

This is my home board, where I know everyone, so I am posting here as OT.
Has anyone yet seen the Wyoming quarter? Worse even than the Half Moon over Georgia! IMHO, a candidate for the worst coin design ever. (I guess that can start a World and Ancient Coin thread)

Do you happen to have a picture? No idea what Wyoming quarter looks like.

Unfortunately, the category of Worst State Quarter Ever has many entries, though the clip-art man-on-horse motif is certainly a contender. I'll bet that one took some graphic designer all of about five minutes to work up. image

How does 'The Equality State' go with a cowboy?

  • LESS than five minutes!
That's a direct rip-off from a lampshade I had in my bedroom as a kid...it was a black silhouette on some kind of yellowish mica background.

Yeah, they must have spent several minutes on that design...

I swear when I first saw that coin I was EXCITED ... I thought for certain I had an error, that it was struck through somehow to get no detail (there was a grease mark around the figure, grease or something on the die.. I still have that coin image)

I was disappointed when I knew the truth

A punt by the state. It's the governor who picks the design.

Let a Wyoming native weigh in on this.

First off, I agree that the design stinks. I am extremely unhappy that my native state would run with that pathetic, flat rendition.

However, it is the state symbol. It is also the university's symbol. It's called "Steamboat, the bucking horse." It's also been my avatar for years now.

There were several candidates for the design, most featuring Steamboat, but also with better looking backgrounds. The Wyoming governor alone made the decision which one would be used. That design is not the Mint's fault, it's Dave Freudenthal's. I'm at a loss to understand why the populace even voted him in.

It could have been such a dramatic design had the the features of horse and rider been filled in...image

Its a conspiracy.....the gov'nor is looking to drive up the prices on Wyoming memorabilia so he can sell his classic lampshade collection!

I started this poll when i got my first one. But just wait for the New Mexico state quarter next year. It could be as bad or worse. Bob

  • I really like the design. It is simple and to the point. I also think they captured the symbol for Wyoming. I live 60 miles from their cold windy state and I think the choice of Cowboy Joe was perfect. It sure beats the lousy quarter that Colorado put out.

Hey, isn't that the state where they tie folks up to fences when they are of different persuasions? Where does "equality state" slogan come from? Wybrit?

No detail whatsoever, and yet when I opened my rolls, they all already looked WORN !! HOW can the Phila Mint even screw THAT one up?!

I agree... a lousy design - - worse than the Delaware & PA quarters.... remember them?!

I LOVE that Canadian "Bullwinkle" Moose quarter, however!! Anyone have an extra to trade? (see... I brought the Darkside Forum back on topic!!)image

Is "The Equality State" a reference to Wyoming's status as the first state to give women the right to vote?

    That is correct.

Hey, isn't that the state where they tie folks up to fences when they are of different persuasions?

    That's not funny. Absolutely classless.

Roy, you've got to be kidding about point #2. Snide comments and personal remarks are contained in this thread. It's just a lot more subtle than in the Liteside, I guess.

Well, I apologize for the comment but I was just pointing out that it is rather incredible that they could call Wyoming the "Equality State".

A lot of these state mottos are over 100 years old.

    Sorry, I dont get it.

What are you complaining about? The design of the Wyoming State Quarter? It is great. Compared to other designs I've come across, it is great. image

Don't ya know it can get much worse?

Let me show you an example of a German 10 Euro Commemorative of 2002, a milestone in coin design.

It commemorates 50 years of German television and what do we see on it, an empty tv screen?
There's the rule for German coin sculptors that the eagle must always fit to the reverse design,
heck, the sculptor did a great job on this one. image
I've seen eagles with trots, with rocket propulsion etc., but this one really takes the cake.

Whoa! That 10 Euro is horrendous.

And back to the quarters, let's not forget about the New Hampshire issue.
That one, among so many, is my candidate for worst ever. I like Mississippi's.

Regarding that German Euro coin & the blank TV screen................ maybe they had a writer's strike as well!! Nothing good on the night he had to design the TV-side!!imageimage

Being a resident of the Granite state all I can say about the NH design is it means nothing now that the
Old Man of the Mountain (which the face on the coin is based on) collapsed a few years after the coins
release. What's that tell ya? LOL!
