How's MS70 on proof silver?

Anybody out there tried it? I have a nice proof that has a very light fingerprint on it...wondering if MS70 will do the trick?

I doubt it, but it is probably the safest thing to try. It is just a strong detergent and it doesn't remove any metal; just organic material. Just be sure to rinse completely and carefully and use a can of compressed air to completely remove the water.

I bought a Dansco of Sacs. The proofs were covered with fingerprints. MS70, warm water rinse then acetone and they look mint fresh.

  • I've not only used MS70 on proof SBAs and Ikes, I've used it dozens of times. Even experimented with different q-tip techniques on a throw-away proof.

Firm scribbing will leave very fine hairlines but it actually takes fairly harsh scrubbing to leave noticeable hair lines.

Since the proof should be handled with delicacy, I use 50-50 diluted MS70 (with water), and a gentle floating action with a saturated Q-tip that barely touches the surface of the proof.

I think MS70 is not just a detergent as it instantly removes any toning.

If toning is hiding hairlines or other flaws you will regret MS70 treatment. Otherwise, it is a miracle worker on lightly toned, dingy or recently finger-printed proofs.

Older finger prints are permanent as their acids etch. Rob

Dorkgirl, you make a good point about following up with acetone, but I would also rinse after the acetone bath.

Rob, my understanding is that it is an industrial strength detergent and nothing more. That's the only reason that I would suggest using it as it does not alter the coin in any way, other than dissolving the organic material. It will eat the skin off of your fingers, so use coin tongs or something. Be careful with that stuff. And btw, using a Q-tip on any coin will definitely leave hairlines, so just this practice should be avoided at all costs.
  • Where can you buy MS70?
