A lot of coins are selling below melt

On eBay. It seems there are many coins selling below melt. Many of the modern commemoratives are selling for some darn good prices. It's kind of nice to get a proof coin cheaper than the melt value.

Am I missing something important? Is there a reason to avoid what seems to be a bargain?

Thanks.

I think a lot of people for get about silver content in the the proofs and collector coins. I cruised through another local shop yesterday and cleaned out the commem's and 2x2 holdred coins in a book on the counter becuase the selling price was below melt. Took them home and bagged them up and shipped them out.

just to clarify, when you say shipped them out do you mean to a refinery or to someone who will keep them for numismatic value?

  • People don't watch the values daily like we do. They are still selling things for last months prices and bidding according to what they paid in the past. It's a guessing game, you can make out if you know it's going higher or lose your shorts trying to buy at these prices.

I'm sticking to silver coinage, specifically barber, walkers etc. Less of a downside risk if your buying close to melt.

I think he means shipped them out to be graded, but I may be wrong.

You are. He means shipped them out as bulk silver (either sold as silver or refined)
