How do you export PSA pop reports into Excel?

This one's been bugging me for a while. When you go to the population reports on PSA's website, you can select all of the numbers you want and copy-->paste them over to Excel for further analysis. However, not matter what method I try, I cannot get those numbers converted to values so I can do calculations on them. I've tried the copy-->paste-->special-->values method, as well as converting text to numbers via the "value" function, but nothing seems to work. I consider myself fairly well versed in Excel but this one is killing me! The best I've been able to do is use the auto-filter to bring of cards with certain pops, but that is not helping me with everything I want to do because it's just a display solution and still won't allow me to sort or do calculations.

Anyone have a quick and easy solution for this that I am missing?

Did you try converting the text to numbers using the Format Cells function?

Have you tried exporting the data from the "printer friendly" view instead of the main pop report page?

There's an invisible character before every number, just highlight that character, copy, then do an "edit/replace", paste the invisible character into the "find what" field and leave the "replace with" field blank. Click Replace All, and you're done.

When I was a member and had access to the pop reports, I would just do a generic copy from the website, then paste into a text file, then run a Perl script on it. Perl is a computer language that is tailored to text.

I was able to keep track of activity on the '71 Topps pop-report while I was building my set. I even spotted a suspicious switch of a 9 to a 10. Same number of cards graded, but one less 9 and one more 10 than in my previous analysis.

If they made the pop-report free, I'd go in and do all sorts of wonderful analyses, but since I'm not a member anymore, that's impossible.
  • Hey... thanks Digicat! That worked like a charm... and very quick and easy as well! In all my years working with Excel I don't think I've ever seen an invisible leading character like that. Of course, I'm typically copying stuff from sources other than the web, so maybe it has something to do with HTML or XML or something. One thing I always used to look for in earlier versions of Excel was useless spaces AFTER numbers/digits, but it never occurred to me to look to the left of the digits. It's really weird that it really is an invisible character though, and not just a space.

Anyway... thanks again for the tip!

heh... for some reason, this answer reminded me of a Star Trek quote...

Q: "Change the gravitational constant of the universe, thereby altering the mass of the asteroid."
Geordi: "Redefine gravity. And how the hell am I supposed to do that?"
    Q: "You just DO it."

    digicat,
i tried that but it will not allow me to paste anything in the find what box. i guess i am screwing up something.
  • Just use ctrl+v to paste into that box. It won't allow you to use other paste methods (like right mouse click, or menu driven) but as long as the data is on your clipboard, it will paste there using ctrl+v.

Here is a thread about bringing pop reports and set registries into excel. Several posts into the thread MrG does an excellent job with his description.

    Good Luck.
  • So does anyone do analysis on these exports to help find cards to invest in? I am wondering what type of analysis you can do on these numbers to help make some money flipping cards.....
