1909 Lincoln . . . Good Investment for 2009?

lots of talk about having a few 1909 Lincoln's around when the new penny comes into play in 2009 - what would be a good way to go in this area? - go high end with a few MSs or by a hoard of EF's - AU's 1909's and sell to the highest bidder - which 1909 would you collect? - comments, ideas, suggestions??

Well, I just got a 1909 S VDB and a 1909 VDB both in MS condition image. I am looking to hold onto them for a while, we'll see what happens. I figure they will probably go up in value regardless of the 100 year anniversary. I am trying to complete a mint set (without gold for now) from 1909.

If my two recent purchases are typical, I would shoot for higher grade Lincolns. image

I think I'll stock up on some higher end 1909 VDB since they are within my price range, the 1909 S VDB is way out of my price range! I'm looking at min MS65 or higher!

Good investment, I don't know as I can't predict the future. They are not especially rare, though.
  • just won a MS 67 Red 1909 VDB from Heritage live auction in Dallas - I also have a raw AU/BU 1909 VDB - looking forward to see how these coins do in the next few years and the run up to 2009 - should be interesting.

I dunno brothers, why not collect for the fun of it and let events take care of themselves? If you are expecting 2009 to make a coin rise, then what do you expect to happen in 2010? Human nature being what it is, the crowd that rushes in will also rush out.

I think that 2009 will cause some interest in Lincolns but I don't think the 1909 will rise by much. Now.......if you want to go out and buy several thousand rolls of them....advertise....run promotions....ect., you MIGHT make a few bucks.

Shoot, coin collecting is fun. Do it, go to shows, make friends, create a hobby that lasts a lifetime and when it's over, you'll have lived a lifetime of enjoyment and that will be a good investment in itself.

I would buy the best of each 1909 that you can afford with discretionary income. Prices have risen steadily the past year and I see it continuing. All are easily attained and no need to spend crazy money for any.

I sold my S-VDB earlier this year.

I'm not collecting them to turn the quick profit...I find it very interesting that there's so much history behind this series especially the VDB stuff, pretty cool

  • thanks for the advice - nice Lincoln's!! - in my research the RED VDB 1909 is very rare in high-end MS - only one coin from PCGS and NGC rates a MS68 - with less than 200 in 67 - relatively rare considering the mintage.

I wondered about this myself, but pretty much agree with Curly.

When the so-called Millenium year was approaching, dealers were advertising all sorts of coins that were dated 1900, hyping the 100 year connection like they would skyrocket. I don't believe they did. That having been said, I always wanted a nice MS 1909 Lincoln. image

I think the early date Lincoln's will continue to escalate in price. Today's prices for nice gem quality Lincoln's may in fact be "cheap" in a few years. Of course, I may be biased as I LOVE wheaties and currently am working on an MS set.

I plan to purchase a 1909-S vdb early in 2008 so I don't get "shut-out" pricewise once 2009 rolls around.

I recently purchased a group of 1909 VDB and 1909 Indian cents, about 160 of each Good - AU. Then sold all of them the next two weeks. The price has increased lately because the telemarketers need quantities of all of those that they apparently will group with the 2009 cents as some sort of package. When the telemarketers have enough, I think the demand will drop followed by the prices. JMHO.

Check out the Lincoln Museum in Springfield Illinois. He should be forever commemorated.
