Robbery

We have suffered a robbery while at a show. The police have a few suspects and I wanted the coin community to be on the lookout for the following.

The coins stolen were all commems and the stand out coin that was stolen was a 1915-S Panama Pacific Half Dollar in PCGS MS-67. It’s certification number was 50107542 and was in a fresh holder. Photographs will be forwarded on request. The coins were stolen from the Indianapolis State Coin Show on November 3rd 2007. Please contact me or the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department @ 317-327-3811 and reference case number I073061469.

Please see my website for big pictures! www.aacoinco.com

What a shame. Hope they catch the crooks.

Was it an armed robbery? It seems there cannot be too much security at these shows.

I feel for dealers at shows, there is a lot going on and hard to keep your eye on everything.

I hope you get the coins back and they get what they deserve.

Can you contact PCGS or NGC to see if they have a raw 1915-S Panama Pacific Half Dollar come in just in case the crooks crack it out and submit it? I don't imagine very many of these coins exist and if one pops up for grading soon, BOOM, HEADSHOT!

Especially if one in very high grade shows up.

How were these coins stolen? Is it possible they could just be misplaced?

Is this type of thing covered by your insurance? If so, what hoops do you have to jump through for them?

  • The coins were stolen at the show. The grading services have been contacted along with Coinworld and Numismatic News. A report was placed on Coinnet and CCE as well. Keep your fingers crossed and i will keep you informed. As for the insurance.....well lets just say my kids will have a lot less this christmas. The big coin belonged to a customer and i payed him off on saturday out of my pocket. He will never know but one day i might have a great Pan-Pac if God smiles on me.

Bob, I'm so sorry to hear about this loss. Do you have a picture of the coin? Perhaps someone can find an auction picture of the coin. It is too easy for the crook to crack it out and resubmit the coin - numismatics money laundering, so to speak. An image would nail the coin for sure.

  • I placed the image into my post. The coins were taken from a showcase and we do have a suspect. It occured during a busy time while dealers and early birds were in the room. With that in mind it must be one of our brotherhood. The MS67 Pan-Pac was in my hand just prior to it coming up missing as i had shown it to another dealer. I laid it back in the case on top of an NGC MS-66 Pan-Pac which is also missing. Several other coins are missing as well. It only takes five seconds to grab a handful of coins and most dealers are great at packing up in a hurry to catch planes and thus we have a lot of practice and snatching coins from cases.

  • I hope they catch the scum, and, more importantly, you get your coins back.

Sadly, at shows - in comics, coins or anything of that nature - it is often other dealers that will hit you worst. Sorry to hear of this.
  • If it turns out another dealer is the guilty party, I hope he's outed for all to see.

no offense and not to point fingers but maybe you should have mentioned it to him.....i just have a hard time trusting and well just to be assured i'd inform the person you got it from.....you never know...

  • Paul, I dont understand your logic? I payed the customer because it was the right thing to do. I also did not tell him because it was a mute point as i did not have the coin therefore i was obligated to pay.

I think he means that this person may have taken the coin himself. He therefore would have both his coin, and the money from you.
