It is tough being a Philadelphia sports fan

I have not posted here in some time, but that is another story.

Last night's embarrassment has pretty much solidified what I have been thinking since the second half of last season.

McNabb has to go, and so does Reid.

I have always been a fan of #5, and will always remember him as a great Eagle QB. He was never accurate, but made up for it with his legs and improv. He has neither. With the exception of the Eagles second possession in the last game at the beloved Vet, I never second guessed Reid's playcalling or draft. Now I want him gone -- besides, he has too much on his family plate (there is a joestalin meatball)

I wanted to see Kolb last night. Down 28-7, with absolutely no hope with a little under 30 minutes to play, he should have entered the game. Is he an NFL QB? I have no idea. It is apparent to me however, that McNabb has nothing left.

The Eagles could have been a "decent" team. I thought they would have been much better in a very weak NFC - lets go PACK!!!
Sixers - whatever
Flyers - can't stand hockey, but hope they do well
Phillies - something tells me that a World Series possibilty will be there for a few years, but something else will happen. Always does.

I'll still bleed green and be a season ticket holder, but my team is done ... for a few years at least.

No, Reid made the right call NOT playing Kolb. Kolb is way too green yet to get in there. Another camp and another preseason and then we'll see how Kolb looks.

I stated here after last season that the best move for the Eagles this season would have been to sign Garcia and to release/trade McNabb. I'm convinced that the Eagles would possibly only have one loss maybe only two losses with Garcia at quarterback. Reid placated McNabb and the entire team and the fans are suffering this season because of it. Let's be honest - McNabb would barely make any team as a third string quarterback the way he has performed.

I've stated before that the naturally skinny guys who bulked up with weights are the one who usually break down first athletically - in any sport. Look at McNabb in high school and even in college - he was a toothpick who bulked up - well that's great but a body like this starts breaking down early in the 30's and that's exactly what has occured with McNabb.

Reid isn't stupid - he saw this also - it's why he drafted Kolb. I still think Reid should stay. I've seen too many incompetent head coaches like Rich Kotite and Ray Rhodes and others, to want to throw away Andy Reid. But Reid clearly needs to get his head together in the off season and realize that his sons most likely would have done the same thing whether Reid was a head coach or not, and his sons may have been worse off, so Reid might as well get his focus back on coaching. Besides - there's no way I can conceivably see Lurie firing Reid - so unless Reid quits, which he ain't gonna do that I can see...Reid is here to stay and considering the alternatives...I'll take my chances with Andy Reid.

  • Well stated 1420. I have not posted about the Eagles here this year. Had a bad feeling about the team when McNabb did the HBO interview.

McNabb's wish has been granted. He does not want to be known as a running QB. He wants to go down in history as mainly a passing QB. Unfortunately now he is as mobile as Marino. The problem is that he sucks when he can't run. He's frequently inaccurate, and can't look off a defender to save his life. Play action? Forget it when your legs have failed you.

Reid? Well I believe that his inability and lack of willingness to adjust is the main problem. Your QB needs to change his game for one year until (or if) his knee comes back. Where was the adjustment? A few more running plays here, but not enough. Last night it was 1/3 of the game.

Please Andy and McNabb. Just leave and let the Eagles rebuild. I wish them the best of luck and thank them for the success, but it's time to go.

Being a Patriots/Sox fan I can completely relate to Philly fans frustration! '86 was pretty much as close as you can come to winning a World Series without actually winning it but you all have heard our pathetic story with that one... '86 Patriots got to the Super Bowl only to have Pats fans dreams crushed by the Bears. We feel your pain! But if New England and Boston can turn things aroun d then so can Philly! Stay strong and hopefully things will get better.

Yea, yea, yea - "everybody" wants a "Dick Vermeil" type back just because Andy Reid ain't "personable" and "lovable" like Vermeil was. Well I think the world of Dick Vermeil but the fact is Dick quit the team...he wasn't fired and we all know that story so no sense regurgitating it. Fans forget that Vermeil team that season was going right down the tubes when he had that "burn out" episode.

Would I take a Dick Vermeil in his coaching prime over Andy Reid? Probably. But that's not the choice we have. Andy Reid is one heckuva football coach and led us to within 4 points of winning a Super Bowl with a prima-donna quarterback. Fans also forget that McNabb turned out to be the best choice of that quarterback crop from that draft...and maybe just probably McNabb turned out as good as he did because of coaching. Most Philly fans would have taken dope addict Ricky Williams in that draft as we all remember.

I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Andy Reid and it's not even close. I believe Andy will rebound from his family problems and get focused again on football. I still believe his only "fatal" mistake this season was being too loyal to McNabb, but he's not the first good coach to make that mistake.

Despite the fact the Eagles could of had a decent season this season, the Eagles have gotten a bit old, and need to rebuild. Reid got a lot of flack for a "wasted" draft pick of Kolb as a first pick - but we can see now it was necessary. And yes, Andy could certainly improve on his draft picks from the last few seasons but we all know what a crap shoot is drafting anyway.

There's not too many Bill Belichick's to be had out there, if any, but there is an awful lot of journeymen head coach losers as well as "seemingly brilliant" college head coaches just looking to step up to the NFL and become the latest illustration of the Peter Principle.

All things being equal and since I don't see any Vince Lombardi clones out there for hire, I'll take Reid any day of the week and gladly. Besides, it appears like he's gonna be here for quite some time yet so might as well accept that anyway - I'm accepting it and liking it.

You all booed McNabb when he came to your team and you all will boo him when he leaves. You all booed Mike Schmidt and you all
booed Santa. You chased Scott Rolen away and you chased Jim Thome away and you have been reduced to throwing D size batteries
at JD Drew and his championship rings.

Philly fan hasn't exactly been easy to play for. Maybe you are getting what you deserve. Maybe your baseball team is just
too damn cheap. Maybe Rocky isn't the best role model.

Philly is a mess.. but hey its the NFL right? Lets review who was picked to win each divison:

    East Eagles.....nope
North Bears....not even on the radar
    South....Saints.....nope
West...Seahawks.....they might be in first, but they suck.

Nothing is guarenteed, especially in Philly, ESPECIALLY in the NFL.

Sooner or later with only a couple of exceptions teams that continue to do well will eventually pay the price for having to draft at the bottom of each round. You can't keep getting lucky with 6th round draft choices emerging as all pros. Without McNabb the Eagles would have been a worse team the past few years, its unfortunate for their fans that they just couldn't manage a superbowl win during that period. I am one of those fans who doesn't judge the success of the team or my enjoyment watching my favorites by whether or not they win a superbowl or championship. It's a shame we just can't enjoy the effort they put into the sport and enjoy their successes. It takes me all of 2 minutes to get over a loss (good thing too the way the teams I root for have played this year).

Unfortunately, teams are often judged by whether or not they win a Super Bowl, but the fact of the matter is that the odds say that a team will only win a Super Bowl once every 32 years since there are 32 teams - that's a stone cold fact. Yes, the Eagles haven't won a Super Bowl but it's arguable, very arguable, that other than that, Reid has been one of the more successful coaches in NFL history - that's right...NFL history when you add up NFC East titles, playoff wins, regular season wins-losses, etc.

Frankly, it seems somewhat crazy to me to want to get rid of a head coach such as this who isn't exactly an old man yet like Tom Landry and Don Shula were when after years of great coaching, father time caught up with them and they lost that coaching edge they had over other coaches. Reid is still basically a young guy yet in coaching terms.

Frankly again, I couldn't care less about having a personable, lovable head coach of the Eagles. If you want that then watch the TV talk shows with Oprah and Maury who are "personable and lovable" - I want an Eagles coach who is a winner and Andy Reid is clearly that.

One quick example...If you had to choose between Reid, Gibbs, Coughlin or Phillips...who would you take? I'd take Andy Reid in an absolute split second, and I'd take Reid over most of the head coaches in the league. Case closed.
