This usually strong division sure is stinking up the league this year. 0-4 yesterday. Pack it in and start planning for 2008.

But for Vinitari's rare miss last night, the AFC West would have three teams tied for first at 4-5 (with the Raiders stinking up the basementimage).

Has it ever happened in the NFL playoffs that a division winner and thus playoff team finished the regular season with a sub 500 record of 7-9 (or 6-10image)? It may happen this year with the AFC West and the NFC West being as bad as they are.

I just looked on Pro Football Reference.com and as best I can tell, since 1920, the worst record for a division winner in the NFL was in 1978 when the Packers and Vikings both finished tied with 8-7-1 records. In 1963, The Bills and Patriots tied for the AFL-Eastern Division title with identical 7-6-1 records. There have also been several teams win their division with a 9-7 record, but I can't find any worse records for a division winner.

Since going to the wild card format, a few teams have gotten in with 8-8 records, but I can't find any teams with sub-.500 records that made the playoffs.

No NFL team with a losing record has ever qualified for the postseason with the exception of the Browns and Lions who were both 4-5 in the strike season.
