Chantilly Show Pickups (Updated and Reposted due to screwed up timeframe in original post.)

Just wanted to show what I picked up at the Chantilly CSA show this weekend.

I can't give much of a report on how the show was, except that as usual, everything I collect is cheaper on eBay.

I picked up a couple raw Champ Bailey, Troy Polamalu, and Hines Ward rookies that I needed.

I cracked out my Bobby Mitchell rookie and John Mackey rookies and paid to get them signed. I am storing them in the slab for safe keeping.
John Mackey isn't in good shape, I am assuming its Alzheimers. Through some interactions with pictures being posed for and such, it was obvious he was grasping what was going on and where he was and his signature still looks good. However, the assistant had to instruct and verbally lead him through the signing of each item....tell him where to sign, remind him to add #88, put HOF here...1992, etc. It was almost kind of sad.

I paid to get Tony Gwynn's autograph on a baseball

Also, signing at the show for a $10 donation to a Breast Cancer Society charity was 1996 Olympic Gold Medal winner Kerri Strug. I just couldn't resist getting her to sign a baseball for me. Thats ball #3 in my unusual Baseball autograph collection. Following Jerome Bettis and James Earl Jones.

Updated to correct the timeframe in the original thread- I would bang Kerri Strug.

PS- That is sad about Mackey, I wish him the best.
  • Yeah, very sad about Mackey.

Gwynn looks svelte. Has he trimmed down? He was really fluffing up nicely.

Its a little decieving since he was behind the table. He may have lost some weight, but when he stood up for some pictures, he certainly still have excess bulk to him.

I forget the name of it, but Mackey has some disease that makes him overprotective of his personal belongings.

    Are you serious?

    Interesting.

ESPN did a story on Mackey last year. I thought he had Alzheimers, which is a terrible disease. I wish him and his family the best.

At least he's still getting out in public, that's a good sign. Plus he can still sign his name more legibly than 95% of todays current athletes. Bonus.

I like Gywnn a lot as a player and announcer but on first glance I thought his sig. was Ray Guy's.

Cool to have those guys sign their RC's.
  • from Wikipedia

"Mackey suffers from frontotemporal dementia, which makes him particularly protective of personal possessions and suspicious of anyone who tries to control his actions. This led to a highly publicized incident in 2005, when airport security screeners asked Mackey to remove one of his rings and he flew into a rage. Mackey was handcuffed, detained and later hospitalized as a result of the incident. During the 2006 NFL season, Mackey was reported by family members to be confused and angered when seeing Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison, who wears the same #88 jersey that Mackey used to wear.[1]"
