How many cards do you all think you have ?

The last few days I have been thinking about taking out all of my boxes of cards that are litterally all over the house .

Boxes under beds , Boxes in closets , Boxes in the basement , Boxes in the garage , Boxes in the attic , ALL OVER THE PLACE!!

Collected from about the time I was 5 years old till present with no signs of slowing down .

Not even counting what is hanging on the walls , mostly autograph cards or memoriabilia cards or numbered cards , I'm going to say at least 100,000 easy , without even counting the complete sets that have never been opened or looked at and unopened boxes of cards dating back to the early 90's .

The thing is I would like to go through them all to see what I actually have , But I don't even know where to start , to try to put them into , let's say order by the year , and card company because lots of this stuff is all mixed up pretty much . . . all except for like the 90's and up where I actually started to keep stuff together by year and card company .

I'd like to know if anyone has any similar problems and how they handled it , I mean I'm just realizing this is going to take a very long time and wondering if I even have the patience to do it .

Sometimes I just want to just burn them and just start over , But I know there are tons and tons of great cards in those boxes and would never do that , It's a damn lifetime of collecting sportscards !

Curious what you guys have ammassed over the years ?

Any tips would help me out in a huge way .

Thanks . . . Anthony

I see we have that time warp thing goin on here today , that people have been posting/talking about . . image

Hey , bein as ya love to count , ya wanna come fix mine up for me ?

J/K of course , but man , you got to have a lot of time on your hands Mr.BigFische !

This is about the only part of the hobby I can't stand, If I were only able to see the future, I would have never had just put them all into these boxes , Football mixed with Baseball, mixed with Hockey , different card companies , different cards UGGGGHHH what a mess I have gotten myself into .

OMG, I just had a great Idea!!

I'll have the wife do it . . . image

I've been in the process of purging cards, trying to build sets with my loose commons, and giving away the rest. I have in the ballpark of 150k cards left, mostly late '80s, early '90s rarities though. Hence the purge.

I started buying packs in 1973 and working on sets in 1978. Since then I have put together complete sets from the major companies from 1969 to 1993. Plus I have all the typical doubles that one would expect from putting together those sets. Some years I have multiple sets, primarily when factory sets were released. With those and all the other cards I have, it is probably between 350,000 & 400,000.
  • I have 57, lol.

    All graded 49 Bowmans.

I'm new, give me time :-)

  • Around 600,000, no card worth less than $10

Id be surprised if there were even 600,000 cards out there that sold for at least 10 dollars.

  • Just a little over 11,000. I have a software program that I keep track of all of my cards which is the ONLY reason I have any idea.

    Yea, that is what I want . . .

    A software program !

And I want those two chicks from Beantown to handle the ummm, Data Entry image

I think I much rather just have maybe 20 or 30 really great cards than have this mess of a disaster .

Although it is nice to open up a box and say to yourself . . .

    "Oh man , I remember when I got this , or holy Crap , I didn't know I had this 2001 Tomlinson . . .

    That's pretty cool too . .

I, for one, am envious of the simplicity of that. I dream of the day when I've actually whittled down my collection to only those cards I actually give a damn about. Less can certainly be more.

Too many....somewhere in the neighborhood of 700-800,000. I can buy like crazy, but too lazy to sort and sell. I'm trying, though.

I have cracked a ton of wax over the years as a reformed set collector and at one point was closing in on 500,000 cards... of which I really only enjoyed about 1,000. Sold off most of my modern sets and higher end rookies / inserts I did not particular care about. Then I put together some killer inserts only team lots that actually sold very well on eBay. Finally, I gave away dozens of 5,000 count boxes to friends in the hobby, a couple local charities, and anyone else who would take them away.

No idea how many remain since it is not as easy as counting the number of full 5,000 count boxes... but if I had to guess... maybe 25,000 tops with most of the bulk coming from the few sets I kept for various reasons.

  • <Id be surprided

Well you would definitely be very surprided then. I was surprided too when I heard there were at least 4 collectors in the US who have over a quarter million cards in their collections dating from between 1869 and 1980. One of them has the most PSA slabbed cards held by one person, 100,000 + There are at least two collectors on the vintage Net 54 forum who have over 25,000 slabbed vintage cards. Hmmm.....wonder what all these are worth? The latest cards I have are Roger Clemens rookies.

I have about 24,000 ungraded cards in my sets: 1959 (about 90 short), 1969, 1973, 1974, 1976-2006 all Topps Baseball. The focus of my collection is my 837 PSA graded cards. That is where 95% of my money is. My collection minus 4 cards is all baseball. I sold off virtually all my childhood collection and put the money in PSA graded cards.

I don't buy any wax, which is tempting, but I prefer to spend my money on already graded cards.

Even at a buck a piece, that's $600,000; at 10 bucks each, are we talking $6 million?

The figure bigfische "quoted" is how many are in my collection. image And no, I don't count up each and every card; I do sets. The reason I have them inventoried is not because I don't have a life or something but for insurance purposes as well.

BTW, to the original topic poster, go ahead and see if you can sort through your collection. I sure would! You never know what you might find in there. Maybe 3-4 Fleer Jordan rookies from way back before anyone even thought about them? I mean, you might be surprised.

    Too many to guess.

I've restricted my collecting to just completing my earlier sets, and Topps Heritage.

No more hoarding anything for me.

I've given away about 40,000 to childrens hospitals and little leaguers recently, and it doesn't even make a dint.
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

700k+. half of these came from a collection i purchased a few years ago. i still have monster boxes i've not went thru. the collection i purchased were 90s (all sports, stars, inserts, etc...). i seem to be buying more and selling less.

i've got a card room in my basement. nothing elaborate at this time.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

  • probably topped out at 250,000 at some point.

Under 10,000 now. slowly liquidating the junk... though i do have 3000 1989 Topps commons in the basement lol.

in beckett baseball last or this month did ya see the shop in cali somewhere that had 20 million cards, that would be a nightmare-alot are commons and stuff, but somebodys always working on something

    <500,000+/-

    unfortunately 75% are late 80's early 90's>
ha i hear ya,thats when i quit collecting the 1st time,i nedd to get ahold of that guy in cali thatsay has that shop, every card is worth something to somebody it says, come buy all these 80s and early 90s sets and 5,000 count boxes i have then !
i cant even sell a 660 count box of reds for 10.00 on ebay lol,i thought i could get rid of alot of that stuff by teams baseball & fb especially, might try some fb have found some fave and a rod rookies in em, but its a slow go

the only ones i really care about are some old psa 8 goudys and sportkings ,some old tobacco cards, and my 50 bowman set and the autographs lol
  • "Even at a buck a piece, that's $600,000; at 10 bucks each, are we talking $6 million?"

Six million is nothing compared to some of the larger collections out there. Just the Honus Wagner card is half of that and I heard Larry Fritsch's personal collection is worth like 50 million. There is a Canadian guy whose pre-war hockey card collection is worth 20 million.
  • I used to have 50,000+. Sold most of my collection in the early 90's. Only have around a dozen cards left, all autographed.

I still enjoy looking at older cards and memorabilia, though.. The collecting bug is always with you. It's always a struggle LOL
