What's GAI's track record regarding trimmed cards making it into slabs?

I'm thinking about bidding on a real nice GAI 7, but not sure how they are in terms of trimmed cards. I know their rep is pretty shot, but I've never heard of obvious trimjobs ending up in slabs.

Im thinking that with GAI's rep being on the ropes, some of their cards (especially tweeners like 7.5 and 8.5) can be had at good deals or even steals now with people afraid to bid because of what actually may lie inside.

I know a lot of tampered with packs made their way into GAI holders but wasn't sure about trimmed cards. By and large, their card grading standards seem reasonable compared to their reputation. I just don't know how many trimmed or recolored cards got by their graders.

I bought a 62 Mantle AS card that was graded 6.5 and looked real nice on the scan. Now that I have it in hand it looks like a freakin 5.

Im sure the % of trimmed and recolored cards in their holders is very minimal, but it seems like a lot because all the stories you hear are about the ones with problems.

PS Lee - If your Grandmother mouths off to me again I cant promise I'll walk away.

It would depend on the card I suppose. I'd be more worred about a 9 or a 10 possibly being trimmed or altered than a 7, unless it were a big ticket item (Aaron, Mays, Mantle rookies, etc.).

Lee, first of all Emmitt wanted me to tell you to screw off.

He then went on to say don't but anything GIA.

use the electronic ruler on scans to measure the height to width ratio prior to purchase or crackout. I bought quite a few gai 's when doing my 62T registry set. maybe 10-15% came back as trimmed.

Well I didn't win it (Link) even though I put in what I thought was a fairly high snipe. Whatever, I was wishy-washy on the card anyway. Looks really sharp for a 7 except that print line running through the middle and the fact that it may or may not be trimmed.

Lee - I know im not unlocking the mystery of the ages here, but why not try for 7.5's and 8.5's, crack them out, and put the burden of proof on the PSA grader as to whether it bumps up or drops down? I try to get into 8.5's at under a PSA 8 price so at least if it comes back an 8 I have a safety net. You can never lose doing that unless you get one that comes up trimmed, and then hopefully you've had enough bump ups to cover the trimmed card.

<< <i>Looks like Will Hayes thinks it will cross! >>

The winner was sundiegocollectibles. Isn't Will Hayes sandiegowill?

I'm actually not looking to make money on it. I want a nice raw one for my collection.
  • I think you are better off not having not won it, my record is 7 GAI graded cards bought and 4 trimmed. All were broken out and resubmitted.

Will Hays is sandiegowill, just like Nam said.
  • i have had VERY BAD LUCK crossing over ( from crackouts) GAI to PSA...

seems they have as many trimmedcards in their slabs as beckett....

i would only buy something GAI if you got it VERY CHEAP......
