Mitchell Report - Clemens & Bonds

Many people bash Bonds for his alleged steroid use. Some don't like him for his attitude.
If the Mitchell Report named Clemens, how would you compare this to Bonds?

Do you have Bonds in your collection regardless of the hoopla, or did you get rid of your bonds stuff, or you never had any?
HOw about Clemens?
If he is in the Mitchell report, do you think his stuff will go down?

opinions, comments?

I just hope Barry keeps his promise and doesn't flip-flop like most politicians and stays out of the HOF. BTW,what makes him think he is getting in anyways???

I dumped my Mark McGuire cards in the trash the day after his visit to Congress.

My opinion is you need to change the title of this thread.

I thought for a second it came out and named the two. Instead, it's the same thing that has been discussed numerous times in the past.

    Buzz kill.

I still have Barry Bonds rookies in my collection, and I'm happy to have them there. I don't have much invested in them, and I didn't get them to flip, so I don't worry.

However, the steroid cloud and that rat Grimsley's accusation does make me hesitate in spending $300 - 400 for a Clemens rookie though.

  • if clemens is indeed named, i would lose all respect for him. Though i have already lost quite a bit for him with his un-retirement year after year for mercenary money.

He's still a good pitcher though, so who cares.

Call me crazy, but I'm convinced that the reason Clemens sits out each year until June is that he is waiting for his off season steroid "cycle" to clear his system. I think that was the case a few years back with Bonds' knee injury as well.

THIS THREAD BRINGS UP A GOOD POINT. THE HITTERS AND THE PITCHERS IN THIS ERA WERE BOTH ON STEROIDS.
THAT MAKES IT AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD IN MY BOOK. THE MEDIA DOES'NT WANT TO HEAR THAT. THAT IS WHY YOU HAVE RARELY HEARD EVEN CONJECTURE ABOUT PITCHERS IN THIS ERA BEING ON STEROIDS.
DON'T GET ME WRONG, I THINK BARRY BONDS IS A COMPLETE JERK, BUT HOW MANY PITCHERS DID HE FACE THAT WERE ON STEROIDS? HOW MANY PITCHERS DID BABE RUTH OR MICKEY MANTLE FACE THAT WERE ON STEROIDS.... NONE.
I THINK THE STEROID ISSUE IS BEING BROUGHT UP BY THE OLD TIMERS TO INVALIDATE THIS ERA OF BASEBALL, THEREBY MAKE THEIR ERA OF BASEBALL ALL THE GREATER.
WHY IS IT YOU NEVER HEAR THIS ARGUEMENT COME UP IN FOOTBALL. FROM PUBLISHED ACCOUNTS THEY WERE DOING STEROIDS BY THE TRUCKLOADS IN THE 70'S AND 80'S. IF THEY WERE SO AVAILABLE HOW DO WE KNOW FOR SURE NO BASEBALL PLAYER FROM THAT ERA EVER USED THEM.

    STEVE
    Good for you.
  • recbball, whereas there is no absolute certainty that nobody used steroids in the 70's/80's, everything points to the direction that they did not.

The first thing to see is their body shapes...too many guys with the build of Roger Metzger in the 70's/80's tells a lot. Dawson, Winfield, Murray, Brett... when you look at those guys in the late 70's early 80's, they have skinny arms, normal shoulders, and their overall muscle mass just does not give any evidence at all that they were doing steroids, or any heavy weight training. As they got older, some got bigger, but fat is the main culprit there.

On the other hand, one look at Nomar Garciaparra on the cover of Sports Illustrated in the late 90's tells you the complete opposite about that era.

Why football and not baseball in the 70's/80's? Weight training was taboo in baseball during that era. Weight training did not start becoming an accepted practice in baseball until the late 80's/early 90's by many. Stretching was the emphasized training practice in baseball previous to that.

Why not pitchers being treated with scorn? I'm not exactly certain that steroids will help a pitcher to the same degree as a hitter. It may give him a little more MPH, but unfortunately most pitchers and organizations today seem to think that is all it takes to be a stud. Maybe if they spent more time working on control, spotting, and better off speed pitches, there wouldn't be so many guys with ERA's over 5.00.

Though, I don't believe pitchers are immune to the same scrutiny. It's just that there hasn't been a pitcher who is as big a jackazz as Bonds who has been suspected, or known to have taken them like Bonds. If anybody believes Eric Gagne was not a big juicer, then I got some land for sale for you.

The biggest surprise to me is that Alex Rodriguez(shoulders anyone?) is not ever suspected, nor Frank Thomas. Arod is as big a suspect as anyone in my eyes, and the excuse that Frank Thomas came up 'big' is really clouded by the fact that he played in an environment that was more prone to steroid use than anywhere else...College Football!

That, and if they contracted six teams to account for the population drop compared to previous era's, then the studs wouldn't be putting up the prodigous numbers they are.

HOOPSTER, I AGREE WITH YOU ON THE POINT THAT STERIOD WAS PROBABLY USED LITTLE IN THE 70'S AND 80'S.
MY MAIN POINT IS IF THE HITTERS AND PITCHERS ARE TAKING STEROIDS IT'S A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD AND IT SHOULD NOT INVALIDATE THE ERA.
AND STEVE, I'M GLAD I COULD HELP.

    THANKS,
    TOM
