Game Used bats question

I am really interested in finding a Rocky Colavito game used bat, and ebay has one up for sale right now. But it's not PSA DNA cert'd, but it looks like its coming from a legit dealer. Here:

What do you all think who collect GU bats about having a "repaired" bat? If you read the description it says this:

Description:
K55 model Louisville Slugger bat that is signed by Rocky in black marker. Natural color. Signs of use. Repair to the handle of the bat. Large crack was nailed and nail holes were patched. Very good repair. What a slugger. Some type of metal was added to the bat, maybe lead filled. Feels a lot heavier. JSA Auction House LOA.

My initial reaction to stay away from this, and hold out till I find one that strikes my fancy more. And what do they mean by metal being added to the bat?

Thanks everyone,
Jeff

Pictures are not really good, you might want to ask for some opinions over at Game Used Universe.

As for the metal, it was not uncommon to take broken bats, drill holes and pour lead or some other type of metal in the holes to make the bat heavy for warm-up/on deck swinging.. Same effect as swinging a weighted bat or one with a "donut" (for you 60s/70s players).

It passes all of the general H&B Louisville Slugger game used tests. Beyond that, I don't know.

Thank you for that bit of information! I am aware of PSA's service they offer, but I figure I'll only do that when I am 100% certain it's a bat I want. I am going to pass on this because I want a whole un-repaired, un-cracked bat. Anyone know where one can find a PSA DNA Game Used Colavito Bat?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there. I would be a little careful on this one. If it is a game used bat its from the 1961-64 period. But I would ask for better scans. Like clearer ones of the knob and the top of the barrel. On the knob it should say k55 I believe, but the only reason a number would be on the top of the barrel was because it was vault marked. The player returned the bat so Louisville Slugger could use it as a pattern. I think they branded it on both ends the barrel and the knob though. Be careful and ask the seller questions like where did he/she get it. You still have some time before it ends. As far as the crack goes its all in the matter of opinion. If you feel comfortable after you get some more info go for it. Just be careful so your not out any money.
