Congrats to Jack Slattery now #5 in MPL registry

He has accomplished this feat without any "RED" coins in his set. The set is full of stunning toned coins!!

Congrats Jack!

The number on that one is just one off the one that Dave Kelly has in his sig line. Those are a couple of beautiful 1914s.

    Edited to correct bad grammar.

That little gem found its way back to BWRC from some kind of trade and now resides in another nice MPL collection in Southern California.

LeeG...brother, I sure hated selling that one, but I'm a poor curly and I had to use it to upgrade. Thanks for selling it to me. At least I owned it for awhile.

Bob, thanks brother, remember, when we get together at a show we're going out for dinner on Brian's dime...errrr should I say on Brian's c-note ( or 2 ).

Thanks Paul, I've never had a set like this before. I hope to meet you at one of the shows.

As far as RB sets go, I would love to see Tim Liston's Number One set. Tim put two sets together in RB more than 10 years ago -- all still in old green holders. I wonder what they would grade today? The descriptions next to the coins listed just leave your mouth watering for a view. I know he has seen the pictures in this thread and unequivocally states his are as nice or nicer. Maybe somebody will buy him a camera so he can take some photos.

Tim, let me know when it is time to send that second child to college!!image

    Umm….

Dunno if anyone has noticed but the set right above Jack’s at #4, which would be my set, is every bit as colorful, maybe more so, slightly higher graded, has been together in OLD HOLDERS for almost 15 years and has loads of upgrade potential for anyone foolish enough to crack them out of their old holders. It’s been listed here on the registry since 2002.

What other complete set in any denomination in any respectable grade is ALL in old holders?

With the recent money being paid for matte proof Lincolns, honestly, I’m dying to sell. Frankly I think the money being spent is… well… umm… (time to be polite) “unwarranted.” As Doug knows, I have two teenage girls getting ready for college. But insofar as all nine coins are in old holders, and because I think the set should be kept together forever (because they are all in old holders), I haven’t done so. Not yet anyways….

I’m not wanting to diminish Jack’s set, not even for a second. It is a GREAT set, as nice as mine. And he’s one upgrade away from passing me. I just don’t want my set, right there next to his on the same registry list, to be overlooked. BTW that set cost me a little over $12,000 to assemble back in the day….

Doug, as many times as we have discussed colorfully toned matte proof cents on this site, I have just one thing to say. “Coins that are red-brown are coins of renown.” The tide is shifting my friend, thanks to fellas like Brian and Jack, who know the real scarcity and value of these uniquely, colorfully toned beauties….

    Tim

PS, I have a camera. But there’s an art to capturing the color as I’m sure you all know. I wish there was an easy way to get these coins photographed. I just don’t know how….

What a fantastic set you have assembled. I wish that I had the money to put a group together that looked like that.

Congratulations on a job well done.

    Hi Doug,

    You said,

Thanks for chiming in about toned MPL cents. Let me start my post with this image. In the past I have owned both of these coins.
    image

Maybe not with MPL cents but with MS and PR IHC I have gone "RED" and they are beautiful coins! But as you can see so are their RB/BN counterparts. It's all about what is the "look" a collector wants for their collection.

I have a 1909 PCGS PR66BN MPL cent right now in my inventory that I could offer to toned MPL collectors that will fetch more money than its PR66RD counter part because of its stunning "green" look.

Reds are beautiful coins as well but are in no way "dominate" over their toned RB/BN counterparts, IMO. Maybe by the price guides or the registry rating system they are but I think there are a few MPL collectors out there who would agree with me on this. After reading Tim's post I would think he is on board with me here.

Anyway, we all have our opinions and you have the right to yours.

    Best,

Well, you see, thats the thing. My opinion is registry sets are a waste of time if you dont post pictures. Personally I couldnt care less about a stupid number on a piece of paper. The purpose of registering a set is to share it with others. With no pics all I see are numbers. I'll pick up the Wall Street Journal I want to see numbers. Lets see the coins. I believe Phil Arnold (Trueview) will photograph the coins in the plastic, and Mgoodm3 takes tremendous pics through plastic.

As far as coins being in green tags that would grade higher, I am not so sure about that. While I have seen many upgrade candidates I have also seen plenty of dogs in green tags.

And just like with women, beauty is found in all colors. Color designations on copper just dont make alot of sense to me. Why discriminate?

I was happy to see Tim Liston post here recently.

I have been aware of Tim's set for a couple of years but since there are no pictures and he doesn't post here much I think that is why most people have not chimed in about the set. I would like to congratulate Tim for completing his set and it being the highest set rating ever acheived at 66.74 without having enterered a "RED" coin in his collection. Tim, I would hope that someday you would put up some pictures of the coins in your set. A lot of the collectors here would love to see images your coins.

I would like to comment on MPL cents in "OGH' PCGS slabs. IMO, Its the coin and not the plastic that counts! Now, in defense of Tim I would say it would sure be nice to have all of my MPL's in "OGH" slabs as long as the coins were nice examples.

Here is a recent "OGH" MPL tale I would like to share with everyone. I recently sold 2 of the 3 graded PCGS PR67RB 1910 MPL cents within the last few months. One coin was in a newly graded "blue tag" holder, The other coin was in a "OGH" tag holder and presently sits in my friend Jack Slattery's collection. Jack will even admit that his "OGH" 1910 PCGS PR67RB is "NOT" as nice as the more recently graded 'blue tag" piece. I am not saying that all "OGH" coins are not nice but this was definitely the case with these two 1910 dates.

Anyway, I am not here to criticize anyone for their beliefs or what they want to do with their coins. I would like to see everyone share and have fun here with their MPL registry sets no mater what their ranking is.

I do wish Stewart would get his 1909VDB PR67RD trueviewed thoughimage

Jack, just to add my congratulations on achieving completeness to your MPL collection.

I think all of us who are or have collected Matte Proof Lincoln cents have a special sense of owning a very scarce coin. With only 15,314 of these coins made, and probably less than half that number still in existence, we each hold a special piece of history for each Matte proof cent we have in our collections.

Thanks Steve. I guess things just "clicked" for me this year, both financially and great MPLs becoming available. Suddenly I'm in very heady company. Right now the air up here is pretty thin ( for me ) and I'm still a little dizzy.

This has been a great experience for me. I've got to meet some great people and do a lot of "coin talk". Brian Wagner has been a great friend. He has given me some great insights into the coin business. Enough to know that I'm better suited for collecting rather than dealing. I don't think I've ever met someone with as much energy as Brian. I hope to eventually meet all you brothers at a show sometime. I was so looking forward to meeting Dave Kelly this month in Baltimore but I can't make it. Dave, brother you have an amazing set! I saw your '13 in Milwaukee and it is a looker.

Tim, brother, maybe someday we'll get together at a show and I'll show you "mine" and you can show me "yours".

I plan on spending a month or two enjoying the moment before I move on to something else. Brian and I are already looking into other areas for me to go into. He's great to work with.

Thanks again to all you brothers for your kind words.

Brian, I wish I could take great photos of the rest of my MPL's. I never seem to be satisfied with the photos though.

I would love to see Stewart's 67red in person, and maybe he will pull them all out for 2009 (I think he has indicated a willingness to). Shylock has a great image of it on his website. I will say that I have seen the 66red that Stewart has as a backup, and the color is awesome! It looks like it just came off the press.

I do like RB MPL's, and don't mean to imply that I don't. It's just something about those minty red cents that pump me up!

Honestly, when it comes to copper images the only thing I use PhotoShop for is cropping.
"Every PhotoShop image enhancement has an equal and opposite degradation of the image"
So true. But I'll admit to using a bit of brightness and contrast, when needed, like salt and pepper.

The reason Stewart allows me to post his coin images is he thinks I post honest images.

  • Incredible!

The thing that just kills me is that everytime is see another Stewart Blay coin I have the same thought. "How can every single coin he owns be so much nicer than anything I have ever seen before." It just repeats over and over again for every date and mint.

Jack - I've had the same thoughts. It would make for a great post.

And I think the answers would surprise a lot of people.
