PSA or SGC. Which for my 49-50 Toleteros? Why?

Hi:

I want to send, between 30 or 40, 1949-50 Toleteros to be graded. I'm not sure which company is better for the toleteros.

As of today, the SGC population reports show 403, 1949-50 Toleteros graded.
The PSA population reports show 7.

I have 3 questions:

1. Which company will you choose?
2. Why?
3. If I told you, that in the futute I want to register a 1949-50 Toleteros set, Your answer to the first question will be the same?

Thanks for your help.

Siramedo.

  • I like both companies but if your real interest is the PSA registry then I would just go PSA. I started the first 1947-66 Exhibit registry set (I entered the set to have it set up), at the time PSA had graded a lot fewer exhibits than SGC. Once the set came up the number of PSA graded cards quadrupled in the next 6 months and is now 4 times what SGC has graded. The values are pretty much the same for both in the late 40-50's cards, the values seem to go up for PSA once a set has a number of people collecting them in the registry, I know that happened with the exhibit set above, PSA values went up a lot and SGC has been selling for a little less. I saw the same thing happen with the 1921 Exhibit set when it came on the registry.

I dont think you can go wrong with either choice. I choose PSA because I really like their registry over SGC's.

    Good luck,

I'd send one to each company and see how they do. Do they have back damage, or warping due to humidity? One company may grade them harsher than the other, they do have slightly different criteria.
Additionally, you may like the presentation in one holder better than the other. Grading one of each will allow you to assess that.
Finally, SGC's registry does bite. But with more graded examples it will probably be a lot easier adding to and upgrading your set (assuming you're sticking to one holder for presentation) if it is in the holder of the company that has graded a lot more of the cards. And a lot easier getting rid of dupes.

I would send them to SGC. Here are the reasons:

    1. The cards are smaller and SGC does a better job of having them secured in the holder.
    2. You are more likely to run across other graded cards in SGC holder vs. PSA due to the population mentioned.
    3. I believe the graded value is actually more for the more obscure stuff in the SGC holder.
    4. You can have them graded in less time. image

I have a complete set of 1947 Tip Top Bread card all graded by PSA. Everytime I see a graded Tip Top it is most always in an SGC holder. The few that I have seen by the other companies have been reprints or trim jobs that were not caught by PSA or GAI because they don't see them enough to realize what they are. Please check out the two on ebay right now( the gai is trimmed and the PSA is a reprint but was pulled a day ago.) However, you can check out the reprint Honus Wagner that is in the Ebay store if you want.
I am a huge PSA fan and I would promote most all cards for their grading. I believe that SGC has a better market for odd-ball 40's and all pre-war cards.

Is this the set with that very expensive Josh Gibson card?
  • No. The Joshua Gibson card is from 1950-51 Toleteros.
