T206 Cy Young Rejected by SGC - too small??

I sent a Tolstoi T206 Cy Young to SGC to be graded and it came back rejected because the "minimum size requirement was not met". I'm not sure what to do with the card now. It wasn't sent back as counterfeit or trimmed, so should I send it to another grading service, or will they reject it for the same reason. How do I determine value? Any suggestions?

  • I would have to first ask where you got it? If it is an eBay purchase and you paid with PayPal, you might want to just forget about trying to submit it to another grading company and file a PayPal claim - if it's not too late. I think you have 45 days (may be wrong), but by the time you send it to another grading company and they tell you that it is too small as well, it may be too late to file a PayPal claim.

However, if that is not the case, then sure, send it in to another grading company. Got a scan?

By any chance, did this card come from an auction in the Boston area about a month or two ago?

Why would you file a Paypal claim?

SGC is basically saying that the card is authentic and unaltered, but that they do not grade cards that are factory cut too small. PSA and GAI share this policy.

Because it sounds to me like it might be trimmed.

I have a T206 Johnny Evers that is almost 1/16th of an inch too short that says otherwise.

  • I didn't get it on ebay, I got it at a local auction along with some other cards that graded well. SGC has a check box for "Evidence of Trimming", but it wasn't checked, so I'm assuming it's factory short. I'll try to add scans...

ToppsGuy - thanks for your scans - it looks like it's worth sending mine to PSA for grading... Can I send a single card to PSA for grading without joining?

No, you will need to purchase a membership, but it includes free submission vouchers (among other stuff) that more than pays for the membership fee.

    ok
  • That sure looks like it could be trimmed on the bottom border. The other three edges have minor wear/chipping, but the bottom border looks like the cut is too smooth.

vintagetoppsguy: there is a margin of error that both PSA and SGC will use for encapsulating cards. I am certainly not surprised on T-206s that 1/16th of an inch is within the acceptable margin of error. But there is also a limit that is too much for encapsulation.

1955 Bowman baseball is notorious for large and small factory cuts, and many of the small ones will simply not work their way into holders. If SGC thought the card was trimmed, they would have said so. I stand by my original answer -- and your repsonse was quite nitpicky, especially as I did not specifically identify the margin of error that would be permissable between encapsulation and return of card and grading fee.

What do you mean you did not specifically identify the margin of error? You did not mention ANY margin of error in your original post. Your response was, " that they do not grade cards that are factory cut too small." Now you're saying that they do, but....

If you took my response as nitpicky it was not intended to be. It was to show the original poster that they will grade cards that are factory cut too small and give him some sort of hope. Let's say that you are right (factory cut too small) and I am wrong (trimmed) and that his card is factory cut too short by less than 1/16th of an inch. Well then, you took any hope away from him by telling him that they do not grade cards that are factory cut too small, when indeed they do.
