One of the earliest slabs?

I have a Sporting Life card in slab #6000002. When I do a cert. check it shows bunches of cards graded afterward, but only one card graded before it (6000001) and the previous numbers are blank. Is this only the second card ever graded by PSA? I think this card was slabbed in 1991.

The earliest cards slabbed by PSA started with zeros. PSA didn't use a non-zero beginning number till 2001 or so (verified by researching old auction catalogs). The earliest cards also had the font shown below:

PSA's numbering system doesn't run consecutively--meaning there won't be a 59999999 before 60000000. You'll find many slabs that start with 5, but until PSA grades 9,999,999 cards with that starting digit, you won't get to 59999999. The Jackson card shown above was the 918th one graded in whatever situation PSA used a "03" as the starting cert. prefix.
  • Bob, you are right and I posted the number wrong, without the zero. My slab is 06000002....M116 Hartzell PSA-7

So perhaps this is only the second card ever graded by PSA?
  • The 02XXXXX and the 03XXXXX certs came before that for sure.

I always thought this was the very first card psa graded...

    00000001

According to the PSA Certification Database, certification number 00000001 is defined as the following:

    ITEM INFORMATION
    Year: 1911
    Brand:

I think the 0200xxxx numbers were first, the honus wagner card was given an honorary number 00000001. I have a handful of the 0002xxxx cards, they came from the david hall superior auctions way back when.

Speculation has been that the first 2 or 3 digits on a slab number pertain to a certain grader, not any actual count of the cards graded. People who sent in batches with diverse composition, such as 1950s football with 1990s chrome cards, got back cert lists with different stating digits, which also supports the idea of different people grading them.

Here's another ancient one - note the name and the grade. As I recall, SBC became SG, then SGC.: SGC

Superior Auctions, I remember bidding on their cards, it was about 10 years or so ago. Greg B-something-(sounds like business). They were out of Michigan if I remember. I haven't thought of them in............about 8 years.

  • Greg Bussineau was behind Superior Auctions (previously Superior Sportscards). I think he handled a number of David Hall's cards.
